Different breeds.
I've been looking deeper and deeper into the different types of ball pythons now for a bit, and i think i've got the colors down, and the names for them.
However what does the whole HET? i think that's what it is? what does that mean? and i've also been looking to purchase another BP, albino, but when i look in classifieds, they show me just the regular black and brown ones coming off as albino on some occasions? What's up with that?
Is there are alot of different things to BP other than colors? or are they all for the most part the same? Different colors different prices?
and another question, i'm sorry if this is in the wrong part of the forum. But like i said, i've been looking everywhere for an albino, and i can't really find any in the classifieds on alot of different sites, and when i do they're much older, which i don't mind, but i'm looking for a younger one kind of, and these BPs seem to be in the thousands, then some others aren't. Are albino's really expensive?
And are there any online sites that sell PBs? like alot of different varieties? I'm not looking for classifieds, just like business's that ship and are pretty reasonable priced?
THANK YOU!

Re: Different breeds.
Het means that the ball python is a carrier for the trait. There are basically two different types of inheritance; simple recessive and co-dom.
Examples of recessive traits are albino, hypomelanistic (ghosts), piebald, etc.
Examples of co-dom traits are spider, pinstripe, mojave, pastel, etc.
In the case of recessive traits, the animal has to have two alleles of the albino gene to be an albino. This means that they would have to have an albino gene from the father and one from the mother.
If you breed an albino to a normal, all the hatchlings will appear normal. They would all be HET for albino.
Here is a great site that has some info: http://www.ballpython.ca/genetics_101.html

Re: Different breeds.
Cool thank you!
Yeah, i want an albino, but it looks as if they're expensive, i was thinking they'd be the same price as just the normal ones, which is kind of a bummer, but i guess it's something to save up for! Job doesn't may THAT much!
Are the Ivory BP's hard to come by? I just saw a picture of one for the first time and they are beautiful, are they the most expensive, or are they pretty much right where all the others are at?

You could produce your own albino if you got a pair of het albinos and raised them, then bred them. That's always an option for you.
Ivories are more expensive than albinos. Ball python morphs (not breeds) vary in their value. Newer morphs will be more, combos will be more (like a spider x pastel for example - which is a bumblebee), recessives hold their value longer than dominant and co-dominant morphs, etc.

Reccesive morphs such as albinos are expensive and hold thier vaule longer you might want to start with a cheaper morph such as a pastel, a 1000 dollar snake is a big investment and you want to really know you stuff becuuase if something happens your out 1000 dollars.
"According to a young expert snake keeper Bald pythons can grow to 8 feet" lol

Yeah, i totally agree, and was kind of ignorant towards that for a bit, but recently yeah, i'm having enough problems with just my normal one, that i really need to give it time.
Appreciate that advice.
