mucus in stool
Hi all!, I took one of my female pythons, to the vet today, as she has not been eating and I wanted to rule out some possible causes. She was a little underweight when I received her. I brought a stool sample with me for a fecal exam. She was free from parasites, and any RI. The vet did mention her stools contained alot of mucus, which indicated some sort of stomach irritation. She received 2 shots, to stimulate her appetite, and I have a follow up next week. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Still not sure why she isn't eating. Temps are good, I have a Herpstat. Any ideas, or suggestions would be appreciated!

This is a new one to me. How long have you had her? Has she ever eaten for you? Where'd you get her from?
All I know to suggest is to keep her plenty warm and make sure she has lots of security. I hope it gets sorted out and healed up soon...whatever it is!

Re: mucus in stool
Thanks for the replies I haven't had her that long, since about the middle of December. She ate F/T for me about 2 times and then just stopped. She strikes, constricts, but doesn't consume. I suppose it is very possible she was wild caught, although I was told otherwise. That is why I really wanted the fecal. The vet I took her to, Dr Case, was the reptile, Exotic Vet for the Museum of Discovery and Science here in Ft Lauderdale, and his practice does comprise of about 30% exotic, so I believe he is certified, but I will look further into that.
Just found out he is listed on the Herp Vet connection site. Does that mean he is certified? I am trying again tonight to feed her , I will let you know if it was a success! I heard her strike again, hope she eats.

How often are you trying to feed her? If she does not eat leave her totaly alone for a week before trying again. If you try to many times it will just stress her out.Unless you are able to 110% trust the word of the person you bought her from i would not count out the possibility she is a wild caught.

Thanks Joe, I know you are right , I should leave her alone, but I wasn't sure if since she got those appetite stimulating shots, If I should wait, or try sooner. The more I get to know the snake, the more I do believe she might be wild caught. She is very skiddish, and though she does settle down really nicely when handled, she does seem a little defensive sometimes.

Sry not to be mean or anything but i would find another vet! Ihave been dealing with ball pythons for more than 12 years now and have 25 in my collection.
And HAVE NEVER heard of appetite stimulating shots Maybe someone else has but i don't think so.

Re: mucus in stool
Well something worked, because after not eating for over 2 months , she just ate tonight. I was skeptical too, but I have been trying every week for 2 months and nothing. She goes to the vet, and than she eats. A coincidence?

Re: mucus in stool
Hi,
In the past I have heard of vets giving broad based vitamin shots to try and stimulate appetite - maybe thats what they used.
Simple fix though - phone up the vet and ask what it was.
Vitamin b seems to ring a bell for some reason - I'm old memory is more a passing hope than a life tool.
