    My New Rubber Boa!!!

    Hey all you snake nuts....!!!

I finally got my new Rubber boa from Glades Herp! This is a for sure peculiar snake and a fine addition to my collection. Oingo Boingo is a male, about a foot long and indeed is quite rubbery and strange. When he is scared he rolls into a ball and waves his head-like tail about in circular motions - very fascinating.

I have him in an enclosure that mimics a mulchy patch of earth with moss and a hide to simulate the Pacific Northwestern biotope that he hails from. I am keeping it nice and cool ( about 70 degrees ) and slightly humid for the little fellow.

He has already fed on three pinkies - it was intriguing to see how he went about feeding, I put the pinkies in a simulated mouse nest in the middle of his enclosure and he burrowed into the substrate and vanished for about ten minutes and then all of a sudden he ambushed the pinkies and ate all three of them rapidly. A true nest-robber.....

When I get my digicam up and running ( I just bought it ) I will be posting pics of him....

Nice! Weird little guys aren't they? I love my rubber boa. He always everts and poos when I pick him up though before chilling out, I hope he outgrows that, lol.

I ran into one of the Glades Herps guys at the Hamburg show. They parked their truck in front of me, so when I was done unloading I had to wait for them to move. I decided to help them out and unload. They have some cool Hots too. Nice people, and umm.... WHERE IS THE PICS!?!?

Awesome addition!! Charina have to be one of the most unique groups of north american snakes around. Can't wait to see some pics of yours.

They aren't that difficult to find really if you know where and when to look. Check south facing grassy slopes with water nearby. Don't bother looking once air temp is above 75-80, they like it cool (Gravid females bask every morning in the early spring and can get their body temp up to the low 80s with a very small patch of body exposed to direct sunlight when air temps are in the low 50s). Cool sunny mornings are the best time to look. For road cruising, try canyon roads with water on the south side and a south or south-west facing slope on the north side of the road. Evenings after rain storms with air temps in the mid to low 70s are ideal. If you are planning on collecting one to keep, I would suggest only taking a juvenile. Adults, especially males, can be difficult to get feeding unless you have access to domesticated strains of deer mice (Peromyscus sp.)

Back to the subject at hand...can't wait to see pics of little Oingo Boingo!!
