    redid the rat area..

I moved a lot of things around in the house this weekend, and one big move was moving my art desk/area from the laundry room into the dining room.. it is too out-of-the-way in the laundry to be a place I feel comfortable working in.. so it left a while big wall for rattie cages! The two 10gs on the left are empty for now; I need to get another male.. The 20-long has two siamese girls; the 10g beside it, my nursing mother/litter. Last cage on the right has my new little male and a girl I want bred; don't think he is ready to breed, but he needed a buddy for now anywho; I still need to add their chewtoys and boxes for hiding, but this is the basic gist of it. My feed mix is in the r-maid tub; lab blocks, pig feed, all-stock sweetfeed, whole corn in moderation, and I am adding in some dried pasta once I get to the store. I love using the metal grill grates for lids; so easy to put the waterbottle above the cage so it can't be chewed, but it isn't good for weanlings that could get out.

It's always fun to move stuff around so it suits you or works better for you. I'm just thinking I'm so glad to have ditched glass tanks for rodents years ago!

    Re: redid the rat area..

Thanks Zekesmom! I had intended to make a wall mural since this was my art room, but I figured it'd be a waste of time since we don't own the house, and also because I could never take it with me or sell it if we moved.. but it's something that makes me smile when I look at it.
I don't mind the tanks for the rats so far; I am not doing things on that large of a scale, and my friend breeds rats on a larger scale than me so I can get them from her if mine are going through a drier spell; I would like to just go with all 10g tanks and line them in a row.. A rack would be sweet but I am not planning on going that large-scale for now.

Your welcome Since you don't own the house and don't want to lose your art maybe you could do a mural on a large canvas?? Then you could still have a "mural" and take it with when you decide to move. If you do I would love to see it

If you are intent on keeping tanks, that is fine, but you would be surprised how cheap a small rat rack really is. I forgot the price of mine but it was only like $50 or $60 with 3 tubs.

    Re: redid the rat area..

I will keep the rack idea in mind; I thought of purchasing some cages from the Amish (they use that square-hole heavy mesh stuff) but they are uber expensive.. seems easier to get castoff cracked/repaired 10g tanks from my friend's store for free.

Zekes, I do plan on painting a lifesize horse in the near future.. not sure how much that huge canvas will be tho.. maybe a pony instead? They're shorter..

They sure are not hard to find and do the trick just fine if you don't need them to hold water. Nice drawling too.
