    Puppies

Ryan and I have been talking about possibly adding a puppy to the family. We love the cats but it doesn't alter the fact that we are die hard dog people. The breeds we have been considering are Rotts, German Shepherds, Dobes, American Bulldogs, and the bully/pit breeds. Our hours work so 90% of the time at least one of us would be home with a pup, there are a few days the hours overlap but not often. My work place allows pets, and we do tend to take dogs many places.

So, after inquiring about many puppies and lots of emails unreturned and lots of questions we might be going to look at these two tomorrow.
They are PBTs (pit bull terriers), 2 months old, first shots and all that. Looking at a male and a female, the descriptions of them and their photos catch me, there are eight pups in total to choose from, parents available to meet.
If we do deside on one the only thing that will irk me is the widespread myths about pits that will provent me from taking my dog everywhere with me.

So, here are the two we are considering.

    Re: Puppies

I know, that little girl just grabs my heart. But they describe her as the bratty prankster and I want to make sure she's not going to be too much for the cats (cant' really call them kittens anymore, they're seven months old *sniffle* except for Shiloh who is four months old)

The little boy is described as being the ultimate cuddle dog. Laid back and a snuggler.

    Re: Puppies

I think they are both cute. I tend to lean toward males more. My males have always seemed more tolerable of other pets, unless the other pet were another male dog. Temperment isn't a gender specific thing though. Watch the puppies behavior and go from there. Or do like most of us and pick the one that steals your heart.

    Re: Puppies

In my experience with friends pits/staffs both genders have tendencies to have higher prey drive...but the best thing with the puppies being 8 weeks old is that you still have tons of time to train them to be very tolerant and unaggressive with kittens/dogs/rabbits/animals of all kinds. Consistant training can make that prey drive non-existant.

I'd go for the male, that eye throws me, but he looks like he's going to be a very pretty adult dog with great stout stature.

    Have fun!

    Re: Puppies

Pits are amazing dogs, and they love their people. They would be in doggy heaven to go to work with you. And as for the myths that go with them... But what I saw when I took mine with me (they went everywhere with me) was that without their ears and tails being cropped, most people didn't recognize them as pits. We had 2 pits and they are the biggest sweethearts you will ever see in my opinion. We never had any major problems with the 'prey drive'...but we didn't have them around other animals too often. They did chase our cat but when she stopped running, so did they and they would all just sit and stare are eachother. They are easily trained that young...they will do anything for you.

I don't know how you could choose between those sweet faces!! We didn't in fact... we went to get one and ended up with 3 (one which we sold later) because we couldn't choose! Either way, good luck with your puppy!!

    Re: Puppies

I do have experience with pits and staffies. I have a mix back home and trained quite a few. The dogs that drove me nuts with their prey drive tended to be the border collie types. They gave me eye twitches

I dont' know how I'm going to choose between those two faces. My husband has duty tonight (we totally forgot) so it looks like I might be the lone decision maker! No stress, no stress at all.

Around here I've noticed that if a dog even looks slightly like a pit people will steer clear. And since I'm against ear cropping it won't be done and their tails aren't cropped so that won't be done either.

Thanks for all the replies though guys.
