I've been thinking of starting up guitar lessons locally, I have a pretty good shop that I can take lessons from...however when I went there I felt as if they were throwing sales pitches at me to buy a REALLY expensive guitar, amp, etc.

I know that we have a few musicians here at BP.net, and I'd like to hear/see some opinions of good moderate level guitars and amps. I basically want to be able to play a bit of metal, punk, and old school rock....so any suggestions for a good guitar for a semi-newb? I have a decent acoustic, its just not my favorite to try and play.

Any advice, links, etc. is much appreciated!

What's your price range? You can start out on an accoustic. It's "recommended" but when I started playing guitar I was totally bored out of my mind with acoustic. However when I got my first electric guitar, I just fell head over heels! You can get a Squier strat pack for like 219.00. Nothing amazing just good for starter. Or, if you wanna get something "sexy" without going too nuts then here's my suggestions for a great sounding set up that plays well and will give you years of enjoyment and your money's worth!




ESP/LTD are killer low cost, high quality guitars. I've owened 3 so far. This one has EMG-81 pick-ups (Zakk Wylde, Metallica, Slayer) are the pick-ups of choice for these guys. The pick-ups alone with installation would cost you a lil over 300.00! Also, countless others use these pick-ups. Also for your first guitar a stop-tail piece is easy for those who want easy changing of strings. I'd suggest that then over a locking system (Floyd Rose) for a first guitar. The guitar is about 599.99



This is the Roland CUbe 30. By far THE best lil combo amp you'll EVER hear. The metal tone on here is just godly. I love this amp and If they made this in a 200 watt head version I'd buy it. My store sells these amps out ALL the time! They sell for 219.99



The best and one of the cheapest tuners around. Korg is the best when it comes to tuners. They are reliable and steady and always trust worthy. They sell for 19.99

And just get a good cord for 15.00-30.00 and you're ready to rock. With this set up you can rock out and sound killer! Any other questions lemme know! Also, I recommend playing a guitar in-person then looking to buy one on E-bay or on an online store. Some people like big necks, wide necks or skinny necks. I prefer either a big baseball bat neck or a wide neck. Skinny necks kill my hands and make em cramp up.

Exactly what I was looking for, a "beginner" guitar that I can have and use for a loooong time! I'll have to head down to the local shop and see if they have that particular guitar, and see if maybe I can try it out during a lesson. You hit the price range dead on, I figure I can spend anywhere from $400-700 on the guitar and another $300 or so for the amp and extras.

I believe I still have that exact KORG tuner laying around somewhere with my acoustic. My mom actually started to teach me lessons on the acoustic...but she's more the "Michael row your boat ashore..." type and could only teach me a few cords, so the acoustic got tiresome quickly, but I figure I should be able to appreciate both after a few more lessons.

Yeah I tell people from my own experience that you pretty much have to spend a certain amount to have something worth keeping that'll last when it comes to guitars. That guitar and amp will last you a looong time and dont be shocked if your friends go out and buy the sama sorta guitar and amp. I honestly have no clue how ESP/LTD can make, ship and sell those guitars at those prices.

I totally agree with you on that tuner Mike, they rock! I've bought many tuners over the years, and many of them were alot more expensive than that one. But that one is the only one I've ever truly been happy with.

Hehe. Yeah I've trie 100.00+ ones and this one just kills em all. I hate it when the needle doesnt stay still. I can't guess if it's sharp or flat or what not.

I really cant tell ya a good beginner guitar' I suppose mine would be a great beginner, I play an Ibanez:



The amp I use is a Peavey Blazer (something or other) cant remember the model, and cant look, it is packed due to our impending move)...

For a beginner guitar its best to not use a locking system since most beginners have no clue how to work a locking system. Plus you can really mess up a locking system if you don't know how to use one. I dunno how many kids bring in guitars with cracked blocks that clamp the string down to the saddle.

Ohh yeah, I had forgot that..good thing you brought that up..its been so long since I was a beginner..and this is the guitar I started on... and I did have alot to learn on the locking system, although I never damaged the blocks on mine.

I still have to maintain the Floyd Rose rigs in the house And none of them are even mine!!!

We do have a few (3) of the ESP/LTD's - very hard to go wrong with those and very solid and expandable beginner/intermediate guitars!


And if it's guitar related Vom is the end-all go-to guy!
