    birthing hammock LOL

i shared in another thread yesterday that one of our mamas was birthing in her hammock. well i went in there this morning and she has made a full blown nest in it LOL she's got the scraps of polar fleece i put into the birthing cages up there... some aspen... she's made it nice and comfy for the pups.

i'm going to leave them and see what happens. i'm thinking i may take another hammock, longer than this one and place it around this hammock and have it lower to the floor... cause lets face it, mamas don't remove the babies from nursing before taking off... and i don't want a baby dragged from the hammock.

but it is the funniest thing i've seen a mama do so far. crazy girl. she must have heard us saying that she's going to snake-food after this litter (she's a biter) since she refuses to let us hold her or reach in and check on her litter... and when she's not pregnant... she's equally nasty to her cagemates.

what a weirdo potato she is

    Re: birthing hammock LOL

heehee... we ended up just putting her hammock on the ground... instead of a hammock inside a hammock. i'll wait a week or two before giving her another hammock so she doesn't just move them all back up and into it LOL

12 healthy pups... two fed today... which leaves her with 10. she had 12 in her last litter as well.

Sweet litter.. I love giving the mamas a whole bunch of stuff to chew up into nesting material! Cute nest choice too..

    Re: birthing hammock LOL

i use aspen (was using carefresh but the 'allergic' response my ratties were having to aspen seemed to have stopped after taking a 9 month break from it) in all my rattie enclosures. we buy polar fleece, cut it up for hammocks and also lay a piece over the cage in the winter... that way they can pull it through the bars and use it for whatever they wish LOL

they are totally spoiled... i figure if i was a rattie... i'd be okay with living in my house - and so i'm pleased with our care.
