    Quitting Smoking: Day 1

Well I managed my first 24 hours of quitting smoking. And boy was it a long day! They say the first 3 days are the hardest, but I've been ready for a long time now.

So for those of you that quit, was the 3 day thing true? Was it easier after that?

My parents, grandmother, and many aunts and uncles quit. Good luck and good choice.

    Re: Quitting Smoking: Day 1

here's some good news for ya. my hubby smoked for 35 years... and he quit cause he wanted to date me so that's 9 years ago and his lungs are 100% healed from smoking! we know this cause he's part of a cancer study and they do mega tests on him... and he's equal to a non-smoker.

so that'll keep you on the track of quitting i hope!

    Re: Quitting Smoking: Day 1

I smoked for 5 years, and I didn't find it too difficult to quit once I was ready. I just had to be sure that anything involved with smoking that I owned was gone. Good decision, and good luck!! The first few days are definitely the hardest!

    Re: Quitting Smoking: Day 1

It'll be 5 years for me this coming Feb 17th. But my story is kind of unique, I was flat on my back with a very nasty case of the flue. I couldn't get out of bed for over a week. At first I was craving a cigarette but I had such a fever and nausea that I couldn't even get out of bed. I kept thinking about smoking so much that I guess I soon came to equate feeling sick with smoking and the thought of having a cigarette made me nauseous. That feeling lasted long after I was back on my feet again and I haven't had a cigarette since.

Never underestimate the powers of negative reinforcement.

    Good luck.

    Re: Quitting Smoking: Day 1

I tried to quit about 2 years ago. I made it a few weeks. Made the stupid mistake of starting again. Long story. Anyway, it does get easier and easier. I promise. Especially if you go cold turkey. Find your triggers and stay away/avoid them if possible. Drink lots of water. Remember what your health was and how much better you are feeling. You will taste food like never before lol. You will be able to breath so much better. SOmething that worked great for me was taking walks.

Good Luck and don't give up!!! Try going to www.quitnet.com there are a lot of helpful things there.

I know I'll make it, but the headaches suck (coffee seems to help with those). Just looking forward to being able to smell again .

Kristy, you from Coeur D'Alene? I live in Lewiston small world.

    Re: Quitting Smoking: Day 1

3 days was hard, 3 months was hard....
I couldn't really tell you when it got easier, but after 20 years, I was ready, too!
I do know that now, 3 years later, I am able to be around smoke without even thinking I want to smoke, but I still have about 1 dream a month that I'm smoking in.
It took me several false starts, but you won't regret quitting once you get the hang of being a non-smoker!
