well i wasnt nervouse at all with chaos untill i braught him out so i could hold him while watching tv. my grandpa moved the blanket and chaos striked at the blanket. I'm thinking it was the vibration from the sybwoofer scared him. now im a little nervouse with him. I had to use goves to pick him up i was scared any opinions on this?

yup...snakes do that. dont be nervouse. I've heard a bite is not painful, it is just the shock of the bite that scares people. It's going to happen sooner or later.The vibrations probably scared him a little, then the blanket might've looked like food, i have no idea what it was, but he is an animal.

I got bit today as well.. It's really not all that bad. Doesn't hurt that much, it's mainly the shock that is the painful part.


Just respect them, and treat them well, feed them, and they shouldn't need to bite.

There is no speakers in my room this was in the living room. I know he might eventually bite me but im hoping it wont be for awhile. I also heard that it doesnt hurt alot when they bite im just hoping he gets me arm and not my hands. But atleast he got the blanket and not me. So i wanted to know how to snakes tell the differince between us and food how do they see?

While humans and mice both put out a heat signature (duh), and sometimes the snake may confuse you for a mouse when you're feeding him (if not using long tongs) because you have a heat signature greater than the mouse (plus it can already smell the mouse), any other time it can easily distinguish between you and food. As long as you wash your hands to rid yourself of any dirt/smells, especially if you own any mammals, you'll generally be fine. They're pretty smart, to a degree.

My advice is let him bite you once. Being bitten was the best thing that happened to me. They strike so fast that by the time you figure out what happened, it doesn't hurt anymore. Now that I've been bitten, I know exactly what to expect, and I've never been more confident in handling my snakes. I have to stick my hands in the cage all the time to change water, mist, etc. and I'm no longer nervous and jumpy. Hence, she's no longer responds negatively to my jerky hands. Seriously though, if you can avoid being bitten, do, but unless your snake is extremely aggressive, you don't have too much to worry about.

From what I understand of it different snakes see different ways depending on how they evolved to hunt in their environment. Since Ball Pythons evolved to live in termite mounds in dark borrows and that sort of thing (rather than hunt up in a tree or chase down prey in long grass) they are thought to have a sort of infra-red sight ability that is apparently more complex than anything any human has so far been able to design. While they may not see like us, they have eyes that are built to focus on movement far quicker and more accurately than humans can.

They also pick up extremely tiny vbrations from the ground through such things as their lower jawbone (as well as other sensors in their body) which is fed to their internal ear structure (they may not have external ears but they are not deaf per se).

They pick of scent through their nostrils and their forked tongue. Their tongue deposits scent into the Jacobson's organ in the roof of their mouth which is so amazing it can even tell if more scent in on the left or right fork and that tells the snake which way a prey they are tracking just turned.

Ball Pythons also have those handy labial pits which pick up heat signatures from their prey. I've read they can differentiate heat differences to 0.2 degrees.

Your snake is extremely well evolved and has a ton of very highly tuned senses to help it survive and thrive. It's going to occasionally react with a strike, a bite or even just a jab at you (a sort of half-hearted strike that really isn't meant to end in a bite). That's just it being a snake and using those finely tuned senses. Snakes rock!

I'd say the shock of them striking definitely is the worst part about being bitten. The bite doesn't hurt much at all, at least not from my BPs. I've only been bitten by Hades, but I'm almost definitely sure he was an import. Even though it doesn't hurt at all, the wounds always bleed a lot. Strange.
