Help with parents

hi everyone. my parents are stopping me from trying to get a snake. do you know anything i could say or do to convince them otherwise because i just lost my other snake (it died) and i really want another. does anyone know any facts or ideas i could tell them about anything to do with bps that would convince them. please help my cause, cause me and my parents are going at it and i need all the help i can get

Not sure this will help but might just give you some insight. As a parent (who also loves animals) I want my kids to grow up and learn to be responsible. Not only for their benefit but also for the benefit of whatever animal they take care of.

Before I will let my kids get an animal they must be able to tell me about its care and upkeep. If they don't understand what it takes to care for it then they cannot comprehend the amount of time/effort it will take.

For this first point I would suggest you discuss with your parents why the first snake died. Was it from a lack of care, incorrect environment, what? Most snakes live a long time so you need to make sure your parents understand what went wrong and how you will correct it this time. You need to understand this too...if it was your fault (not saying it was) then are you sure you are ready for another? and the care it will take to keep it?

Once you can articulate the care and what you have learned you will put your parents at ease.

Then you question them is why are they against it. It is hard to argue a point if you don't understand their concerns.

How did you convince your parents to allow you one in the first place?

I do not know how old you are, but I think if you can convince them that you are responsible, and YOU will care for the snake's every need, and YOU will pay for food, vet bills, etc, they may give in. I live with my grandparents. I was 17 when I got my first snake. They were not happy when I mentioned that I'd like to get one, but I showed them books, boasted about their lack of desire for human affection, quietness and in general, they are fairly clean...I'd explained my desire to be a good reptile owner, proved I could pay for food and vet bills, and eased their worries.

I now have 4.

I know where your coming from, I wasn't aloud a snake of any kind. The best aproach to getting your parents to buy you the snake is to do your research, inform them, teach them, ask them to toake you to a petshop and handle some of the snakes that they have. Show them that you can handle taking care of a snake, that you are responsible enough. Offer to pay for it. I bought my cornsnake and payed for it all. After i got the snake i got my parents warmed up to them, and they really started to like them, I later got a ball and am now getting more balls and corns this up coming summer, and plan on breeding them some time next season!! You have to have very, very, good patience. Good luck!

My mom's never had a problem with my snakes. As long as SHE dosen't have to take care of it I can have it.

The end rule is, if you live in their house, it's their rules.
The advice given so far is very good. Do a bunch of research, including exactly what set-up you'll need and what the set up will cost. Find a vet to use, show what the food items will cost.

Do you have any friends that have a BP? You could always take your parents to go meet one. Hard not to fall in love with these little guys. Just dont show them a 5 footer, that will jsut freak them out.

I kinda ran into this a little while back when I had to move back home. Mom wasnt too keen on havign a snake in the house but once I showed her that the snake would not be able to get loose and how gentle he is, she was ok.

I had the same problem. My parents wouldn't let me get one. No matter what I told them or coulld prove to them they still wouldn't budge. So as soon as I moved of to college I got one. Now I have 4 and going to pick up 2 more this weekend.
