I'm no fan of PETA but as such a hate object for the right wing many people have a avested interest in making them look bad. I'm not sure you should take this at face value.

PETA is summed up in an episode of South Park.

    Re: More PETA

I notice one thing. No one mentions the cows OWNERS. Where are they? If I own a dog, I have to feed and water and shelter it. If my neighbor owns a dog and doesn't feed it, that doesn't mean I am obligated to go buy food and feed it. I disagree with PETA in a lot of situations(ok so MOST situations) but honestly, why the heck should ANY non-profit animal welfare organization spend it's money to feed animals destined for sale to profit owners who obviously don't care for them? They are CATTLE. OWNED by ranchers who are not caring for them. Our tax dollars will go to airlift hay in to feed them, so the rancher can turn around and sell them for profit in spring.
Don't get me wrong, I think that food should be gotten to the poor animals.. but I also think that the blame and the bill should go to the right people. Why is it that everyone has their hand out, going "Not my problem."?
Find the owners, confiscate the cows as soon as there is a thaw and sell them to pay for the danged hay and helicopters! Its ridiculous that people will scream that PETA and the HUmane Society should pay for this 'rescue' when the owners should have planned for something like this. It's not like we don't get blizzards nearly every year. And every year there is cattle that get stranded out in the middle of nowhere and get hay drops, and every year the ranchers do the same thing.
This year it was more widespread, and better covered by the media. But guess what? Happens every year out there.
