Feeding question

My husband and I are once again disagreeing on how much Dax should eat. He is a year old BP male, and is eating one small adult rat a week. Paul wants to increase his prey size because "there is no visible lump after we feed him" and I thought if there was a visible lump, the prey was to large. Opinions, please?

My husband and I are once again disagreeing on how much Dax should eat. He is a year old BP male, and is eating one small adult rat a week. Paul wants to increase his prey size because "there is no visible lump after we feed him" and I thought if there was a visible lump, the prey was to large. Opinions, please?

In my experience and I am sure other will agree on this, a BP does not need to eat anything bigger then a small rat once a week even as an adult.


The advantage is to that a BP feeding weekly on a smaller prey is a BP that will eat with more consistency because often BP in captivity are overfed by their owner and will at some point fast to catch up.

That is plenty in my opinion. We used to feed mediums too our largest male until joining here, and now scaling back the prey size we get MUCH more consistent feeding. We also feed nothing bigger than a small toour biggest females oncea week, and they are putting on weight like champs ...

Adult males don't need to pack on the pounds like adult females do. He should be fine with small rats. If you are feeding live I always feel smaller is safer and easier to control (escapees AHH!)
