If I use a lower wattage heat bulb the temp will drop too low so I've been using a 100w bulb. Now if using a heat rock is dangerous isn't a hide box or cave that gets too warm under the heat lamp just as bad?

How are you measuring temps? Your hide may not be as hot as you think, get your thermometer and get a surface reading of the hide and see.
