    Re: Ranco v. Johnson

I figured for an extra $30 I may as well just get a proportional rather than that Ranco. That way I won't have to drop $75 now and another $100+ later. So, I ended up with a Herpstat 1 from reptilesupply.com (I know MG was a bit cheaper, but I had to pick up some other things as well). Thanks all for your feedback.

Sounds like you did the right thing, the herpstat is awesome! I am thrilled with mine, so easy to operate! And for the well being of your snakes, the difference between the on/off, and proportional really isn't that much.

    *Warning Thread Hijack *

i have a 30gallon glass tank for my BP. This is more of a what kind of UTH should i go with? everytime i hear people talk about flexwatt tape, it's in reference to racks...is it good enough for a glass though? and how much of my bottom should be covered in UTH.

I think i'm just going to splurge and buy a helix proportional...but i need to know what it's going to. Thank you

    Re: Ranco v. Johnson

I will probably get a Helix when I can afford it, BUT...

Does a snake really notice the difference between an on/off and proprotional thermostat.

I have an on/off with the probe right on the glass. I have a digital thermometer probe right next to it. The temp swing is about 1.5 to 2 degrees F.

I realize that I, as a mammal, can't really tell the difference between 80 and 82 degrees, but does my snake.

I certainly can tell the difference between 80 and 90 degrees, but I have two different thermostats for each range.

But does it really improve the quality of life for my pet to have a proportional thermostat?

    Re: Ranco v. Johnson

I have 3 rancos and 2 Herpstat pros and the Herpstat is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The most accurate I have seen. Each one controls my ambient and three racks(Different rooms). Will do my incubators too when needed. Herpstat rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Something a lot of folks don't know is that the Johnson 419 can be set up to have a night drop. It requires an external control relay and timer, but is an alternative for those who don't want to pay for a proportional and require a night drop.

    Re: Ranco v. Johnson

I don't mean to throw a monkey wrench into the gears, but there are "a lot of" differing oppinions on using night drop temperatures.

I am throwing this out for discussion. If this should be moved to a different thread, I leave this up to the moderators.

Why would you change the wonderfully set-up temps that you have in your environment by adding NIGHT DROP temps. I am sure that the snake would prefer to have his temps stay the same all the time. --- One of the major reasons to getting a proportional thermostat over an on/off thermostat.
