not sure if you asking "how" to physically set it up or "what" people are using.
Following Ed's reply I'm using a Herpstat with 3" flexwatt.

i have a two different thermostat models. I have several herpstat II's and a couple of ranco's.

I use 11" Flexwatt with a DBS-1000, and have had great results. I run the flexwatt down the back, vs. belly heat, and manage to get about a 8-10 degree gradient in my tubs.
