    My X-Mas List for Myself

Here is a list of the things I'm going to be getting in the next few months for my first BP.

Either 1 40qt/67qt Sterilite Tub or 1 32qt 4 drawer rack system from Herp Enclosures.
    (Price: 1 40qt= $7 67qt= $8 1 32qt 4 drawer rack= $200)

Flexwatt Heat Tape (I'm not sure how much or what size or how to put it all together but I'm hoping that someone here can help me. I'll be ordering from Reptile Basics. They say they can do the connections before shipping. What does that mean?)
    (Price: 3"= $2.20 Wire/Clip/Insulator set= $5)

Thermostat (anyone want to suggest a good brand. I'm looking at Helix. Is that any good.)
    (Price: Helix DBS1000= $130)

PE-1 Infrared Temp Gun (Says its better than buying stick on reptile thermometers. Anyone have any experience or comments about this item?)
    (Price: $25)

My Weigh 7001DX Precision Digital Scale (Because I want to keep accurate measurements on my snake/s.
    (Price: $39)

Hides (Might someone point me in the direction of a site that sells hides? Or I can look in my local petstore and see if they carry them)
    (Price: I estimate around $8/per)

Newspaper (This is free and I can possibly get it from work.)
    (Price: Free)

    Any other things I'll need?

    So far costs:
    $230-$420

the heat tape needs to be plugged in... the set makes that possible!

or you can go to the dollar store and get some plastic bowls and cut an opening in the side as a hide.

A 67 quart tub is larger than you'll need, ESPECIALLY if your first is a baby.

If you buy the rack, you won't need to purchase the flexwatt, it will be already installed - but check to see if you have to purchase the tubs. When I purchased mine, I had to purchase the tubs at Target, and just purchased the rack from Rich and the Helix from Reptile Basics.

Sounds like you're really taking the time to prepare for your new baby - we like that! I think you need to go with the rack, that way when you become addicted to the first, you have space for three more! Yes, I'm an enabler!!!

Rock on! Research and preparation BEFORE the arrival of your new snake shows that you care about the health and wellbeing of your new pet. Best of luck and welcome to the site!

Re: My X-Mas List for Myself

Well I went to the petstore to look at snakes and to hold one and I fell in love with a snow corn snake. I liked the ball python they showed me but the baby corn snake stole my heart. My grandmother is letting me keep it at her house until I move into my own place so I'll be going tomorrow to get some stuff for the corn snake.

They told me the little snake can be kept in a 20g long tank with a heating lamp. Will this work. They sell rheostats at the petstore. Can this replace a thermostat. (I will get a thermostat in the next few months anyway because I plan on getting the rack system.) The list they gave me is this...

20g long tank with screen top and screen clips. (I just need the screen top and clips since I have a 20g long already)

bedding enough for a 20g long tank (I can use newspaper which I can get from work. I checked with the manager and she says I can have the newspaper they don't send back for free)

Two or more hides (I can get some cheap ones or make them myself)

Heating lamp and heating pad (will be replaced by flexwatt tape when I get the tub rack)

Digital Thermometer (to make sure the temps stay normal. I will get two to measure warm side and cool side.)

Rheostat (Will be replaced with thermostat when I get the rack)

    Frozen Pinkies for meals

Re: My X-Mas List for Myself

Note: I just re-read my post and it kinda sounds like I've already got the snake. This is not true. Tomorrow I will be going to get the things needed for the snake and I was wanting to know if the things on the list are approved for a baby corn snake and if there is anything else I need before I get the snake.

I know I have suddenly changed everything, but I just can't get that snake out of my head.

which store in richmond? rheostats are basically dimmers, they will work but need to be monitored and adjusted if the temps sway alot. 20L is a good tank, might need to section it off for a baby corn or ball. rich at herpenclosures makes some nice racks, the 32 qt can be used for alot of different snakes. helix is my choice of thermostats. here's a 32qt herpenclosures rack with the tub divider in place.

Re: My X-Mas List for Myself

Awsome. I will definatly be getting that 32 qt rack system in a few months, but for now a 20g long tank will do for the snake. Today is going to be interesting. At 9am I am to wake up my friend and we both go over to my grandmother's house to clean the fishtanks, then we come back over to my house to rake leaves. Then at 2:20pm, Tyke, my bearded dragon has a vet app. (We're not sure he's going to make it. NEVER use crushed walnut. We learned the hard way.) If the vet says he has a very small chance of making it, we might put him down. I don't want him suffering. Then after the app. we are off to the petstore to get the stuff for my new corn snake. Take it home, set it up. Wait till we get the temps right and then go get the snake. So, today shall be interesting.

So a question or two before today gets into gear.

How long should I wait to feed a pinkie to this snake? (And how many pinkies?)

(Just had to put him in here. I love smilies)

Should I ask to see the snake eat before I get him?

Any other information I should know or any other supplies I should get before I get this snake?

Make sure that corn gets up to a pretty good size before housing it in a rack if that's what you're planning... those little snakes are EXCELLENT at escaping.
