computer woes...
I may not be on here as much as usual in the next few days/week. Our main computer has gotten a virus I guess, somehow; we cannot get past the startup acreen; says files were deleted. So this being a newer computer, we took it into Best Buy, the tech says we need to PAY for a restart disk.. so people, they tell us that the price of the comp when we got it was so low due to their not being a restore disk w/ it.. we were never informed of this, never asked if we wanted one (we would have gladly bought it.)
I am on Mark's laptop now; so-so verizon connection (out here in the sticks) there is only one spot near a window on a certain table where it htis for a connection, and I have to stretch over a darned table and kill my arms to type.. GRRR I am hating the world right now!!! BUYER BEWARE. We wanna sell this junk and get a homemade compy from someone we know.

Re: computer woes...
I've heard a lot of horror stories about Best Buy computers. Both my husbands and I's laptops are from Dell and my husband does his own fixes so I can only offer sympathy.

Re: computer woes...
I have never had a good time with PC's which weren't home-made. My father uses Dells and lemme tell you, after about 6 months, he's had problems with both of his PCs--nothing huge, but enough to be annoying. My brother's Compaq fried a year after he owned it.
I'm on my second "home-made" PC and building one cost very little, and for the power I have in my tower, I would have paid twice as much if I had bought one equivalent from Dell, Gateway or HP or whomever.
Home made is the way to go if you know someone who can do it for you (fortunately, I've got a boyfriend who knows how to do that stuff )

Re: computer woes...
Not including a restore disk with a computer is BS no matter what the price is. You paid for an operating system, so you have the right to be able to reinstall it.
Did they at least give you a Windows CD?
Is there a sticker somewhere on the computer with a windows product key?

Re: computer woes...
I own a Dell, and I will admit that the lower end products break down all the time. I know this because of my girlfriends laptop.
My Dell was pretty expensive and I've never really had a problem with it. It's a first Gen XPS laptop. On top of that I got the extended warranty where a Technician comes next day to fix your computer.
Dell definitely has some pros and cons. If I had to do it all over again I think I would have spend my 3k on a new morph. Well I would need a computer to be posting here so 1k on a homemade desktop and 2k on a nice new morph.
Its nice knowing that if something breaks they'll be there the next day to fix it, but to the same effect the money you save having someone build it definitely plays a factor.

Re: computer woes...
We just bought a new laptop the other day, and while out comparing models and prices, we noticed that several top name brands did not come with an OS disk. Apparently that is a new trend in computer marketing, but it's really stupid and very anti-customer if you ask me. My hubby (who is our computer guru) says that most computer manufacturers will still send you a disk for around $10 if you just call and ask for it...but you have to know to do that...and some still won't/can't for whatever weird reason.
We did make sure that the laptop we finally chose did indeed have an OS disk with it.

Re: computer woes...
Its not really new at all. manufacturers have been doing this for some time. More often than not now there will be a hidden partition on the computer for restoration to factory spec. OS disks are rarely sent but usually you can get a restore disk if you call into the manufacturer. Them telling you the price was so low because it didn't come with one is BS plain and simple. A 10 cent cd being left out does not lower the price.
I absolutely never recommend anyone buy from a retail store like Best Buy (and I do love that store) The sales "kids" are so full of crap with their "you'll need this also..." lines. Not to mention that more often than not they really aren't as knowledgeable as they should be.
Buy direct, save money, get a GOOD warranty and you will be set.
-wew, ok sorry for the rant.

Re: computer woes...
I agree that the os disk isnt as common these days because they normally include a full restore disc with all of the drivers/proggies...
but if they dont include one they should include the other, so annoying

As stated, see if your computer has a "system restore" already on it - you can restore to a previous point in time ie "pre-virus", or back to the way it came out of the box "factory spec"
