    Regurg?

so i found this in my RTBs tub today....It doesn't smell bad, but im not sure if it is a regurg. or not. I fed him 3 days ago, a hopper. It is his 5th feeding with me, but his second time on fuzzies, the other times were pinkeys.
If it is a regurg...what causes that? what should i do to help the little guy out?

    Re: Regurg?

After three days I'd doubt it was a regurge though it is possible, and I'm definately with Aleesha, regurges smell beyond horrible.. *shudder*.

The photo appears to show a not quite digested lump with a tail, I am curious to know your set up stats as well.

    Re: Regurg?

42" long tub, aspen substrate, fresh water, new hides, UTH on the hot side, temps are 90-92 on the warm side, and 86-87on the cooler side. Handled daily, but i wait 3 days after he eats to handle him. I was taking him out for his daily handling for the first time after he ate, and saw it.
It does not smell bad, and that is why i didn't think it was a regurg, but you can see a tail in there, so maybe he just didnt digest it well?

    Re: Regurg?

Regurgitation is when food is expelled from the esophagus and it usually occurs within 24 hours of the meal. Regurge generally doesn't smell very bad at all. Vomit is the prey item, partially digested, being expelled from the stomach. This can happen days after a meal. The smell is unmistakable and horrible. There are many reasons why a snake could regurge or vomit up a prey item. They include but aren't limited to:

    Internal parasites
    Improper temps for digestion
Stress before during or after feeding
    Overly large prey item
    Obstruction
    Dehydration

If parasites can be ruled out, the most likely cause is a husbandry issue. Check your temps, humidity and make sure there are adequate hides available. Hope this helps!

    Re: Regurg?

Your cool side needs to be in the 80 degree range, it's a bit high right now.

I would get those temps down a little on both sides. BCI don't need to be kept as hot as Ball Pythons. I would go for 80-82 ambient with a 88-90 hot spot. Has he been checked for internal parasites since you got him?

no. he hasn't been checked for internal parasites. I just went and turned down the temps, i'll check them in 20 minutes to see what they are at.

    Re: Regurg?

Amy it will take a lot more than 20 minutes for an enclosure to stabilize properly. I'd say a fecal float is a fine idea and perhaps less than daily handling until the you are certain this snake is completely healthy. Just so I'm clear on this...are you feeding rats or mice?
