Re: dial up internet
I'll NEVER go back to dial up!
I have DSL at home and my computer at work runs on dial up... Oh on... never again!

Re: dial up internet
I'm waiting for the first of the younger generation to ask..."what's dial-up"
As to some thoughts...
If DSL is available you will find that the service is the same or cheaper in some cases than dial-up. I finally got my dad to leave AOH...AOL after I can't remember how many years he's had it. Anyway the promotional first year was like $12/month which is less than he was paying the dial-up service. On average without promotional deals I see DSL for around $15/month. Cable internet is usually up in the $40-$50 range around here.

Re: dial up internet
I could NEVER go back to dial up either. We have cable, and I actually can't stand to use my parents DSL. Even that is soo slow to me!

Re: dial up internet
To me, broadband is a required utility, like water or electricity...we passed on an apartment a few years ago because it did not have access to any kind of "real" broadband (I don't consider satellite broadband)...
Isn't your magazine all on-line? I would think you would go NUTS trying to do that over dial-up.

Re: dial up internet
I use dial-up, and have wireless access at work. Honestly, there isn't much difference unless you are downloading. At least not to me.
I have PeoplePC and its $10 a month, and all the high-speed stuff is $40 or more.

Re: dial up internet
The fastest dial-up I've seen is People PC. They're not lying when they say they get you the fastest connection, for dial-up that is. I still wouldn't get it anyway, just because of all the junk associated with dial-up (no phone usage, SLOW, etc.).
I use EarthLink DSL. It's fast enough but could be better. Qwest is faster (in my opinion). If dial-up was ever implemented at my house, chaos would ensue.

Re: dial up internet
You really should look into wireless Internet (we get it for Mark's laptop, through Verizon.) It is $60 per month, and it has been working fine for Mark; but you need to be in an area that gets Verizon phone signals.
Now, I would be Very cautious before getting the Dish service from HughesNet. We have it.. but there are some major drawbacks. One, the contract they make you get into.. ours is a 2-year one. Two.. you can not download more than a certain amount of data per week.. they do NOT tell you about this anywhere, we found out the hard way when Mark was DLing Counter Strike.. the limit is 100 KB a day.. so if you plan on Dl much, please use caution.. the other negatives are: snow collects on the dish and needs to be swept off.. the CS reps can NOT speak recognizable English.. their home rep deleted things off of our computer (an antivirus) and installed a different one w/o permission.. also, it is Not as fast as cable.. but if you can't get anything else, it is way better than DU.. as long as you have a newer or faster computer.
Please PMJ me with any Qs about this.. I feel I could go on and on but it is getting late!
