mite eye?

I was reading this old thread http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showthread.php?t=17561 but the question never really got answered.

so does anyone know what this is? is this 'mite eye' as I have heard it called? Or do you think its just a stuck piece of shed?

I'm not sure what that is. It doesn't look like any retained eyecaps that I've ever seen. (Not that I've seen a LOT, but I've seen some 'cause my gopher used to get them when he was little.)


The only thing I know to suggest is to make an appt with your vet and have him checked out. Sorry I can't be more help.

I agree with Judy.Unless i am missing something that i am unable to see in the pic.If you are concerned with the colored area to the right of his eye,it looks like part of his eye socket area.

from reading the thread it seems that it wasn't a big deal... especially since the topic was just dropped. if it had been a big deal, there would have been more written about it IMO.

Let me start over...I apologize.
This is my ball python. He had mites and have been trying to get rid of them. No I have not used PAM. I have used mineral oil and I have been bleaching his tub frequently...always using newspaper. I always provided a bowl to soak in if the mites returned...which they always did.

This last time I pulled him out to clean up the tank...I saw that thing on his eye. I tried to soak him. I tried to carefully remove it with mineral oil on a qtip. But I dont think it is a stuck shed. It looks KINDA like his eye socket got eaten up by mites (who love going for the eyes) and it got inflamed and swollen til it came out a little bit.

If nothing else...I would like for other people to learn from my mistakes. Hopefully we can figure out what this is...How to treat it...And how to prevent it from happening to other snakes! My gut instinct tells me it is from the mites...but since I have not found much in the archives on this topic...it remains a mystery to me.

If you are constantly having the mites coming back then why have you not allready ordered or bought some PAM? By you using the mineral oils and such you are only killing a small fraction of the mites.I looked at the pic once again and i am unable to see anything out of the normal.This might be because its a pic and you are seeing it in person.Please contact your vet ASAP.

Why? Because I was convinced it was my human error, not the product I used to eradicate the mites, that was causing the failure. I have never, EVER, seen PAM at any pet store. I am not saying pet stores should be the standard to strive for, at all. I am simply saying that such a great product, like PAM, should be readily available, not just internet orderable...imagine if I didnt have the internet. I want PAM, NOW, not in a couple days. know what I mean?

I realize that some mites obviously slipped by the mineral oil and bleach. Either that, or the room he is in, has become contaminated with mite eggs. I might have to treat the room. Mites can crawl up to 40 feet per hour. I would not be surprised if I eradicated all the mites in the tub and on my snake, but eggs hatched nearby and the mites found their way to the snake once again. Clearly this would indicate I need to use a preventative permethrin based product such as PAM. I am not stupid. I realize what I have done so far is not working. I realize a new approach must be made. But I am not here for help on eradicating mites.

If you look to the right side of the eye. There is crescent shaped whitish colored 'something' that borders the right side of the eyeball. In between the eyeball and the scales. It is clearly visible in the picture, but if people are having trouble seeing it...I can highlight it.

I fully plan on contacting my vet ASAP. It doesnt hurt to see if anyone here has ever seen something like this, right?

I hope to make this a lesson for myself and others to look back upon...but first we need to figure out what it is. Thanks for all the replies.

are you as grouchy as it sounds in this response (post #8) or am i mis-reading you?

i can understand your concern and it sounds like you know that the method you have been using is not working for mites. it also sounds like you know you need to order a container of Provent-A-Mite via the internet (as it would have arrived much sooner than all the time it's taken you to try to eradicate the mites on your own).

what i believe joe was attempting to assist you with is... if you suspect the eye issue is mite related and you know that the method you are using is not working... then why not get a method that works?

also... joe and judy suggested you contact a vet ASAP.

I was not trying to sound like i was doubting that you have tried to kill the mites.Yea it does bite that PAM is not normaly sold in pet stores.So i was looking at the correct area in that pic.I guess the area you can see does not show up well enough in the pic for us to veiw.
