Selective Breeding and looks
Hey guys! I was curious, how do you selective breed? I read a couple of threads saying I made these beautiful babies thrugh selective breeding- is it about looks? What classifies a snake as ugly vs hot? And last but not least, why is the line so important, ex: NERD line pastel- is it the reputation of the line? Thanks for all the help!

Re: Selective Breeding and looks
Breed two snakes with the same desireable traits and they may pass on to the babies. Some is going to be personal preference, like a busy pattern or reduced pattern. Some traits may show up better when mixed with certain other traits, like breeding your male pastel to a light normal female as opposed to a dark one. Different lines of traits can have different characteristics.
Nerd lemon pastels have the reputation of keeping that yellow color through adulthood, and the other pastel lines may look a bit different from each other.
Some lines are not compatible with other lines, like the axanthic trait. If you get a VPI axanthic and try to mix it with a different line, you will end up with just normal babies.

Now this is from my experiance only. When i look for females to use in my breeding projects i look for one that has a nice reduced pattern(not to many alien heads) and has nice light coloring also. The reason i look for these in my females is for one basic reason,i want to see if it improves the pastels when i do infact produce them. Now some lines of say pastels tend to "brown out" when they reach adulthood. So as far as i know thats really the only big differance in the pastel lines.Everyone has there own opinion on what makes certain snakes ugly or hot.Perfect example i could not understand the big interest in yellow bellies as they did not look like anything special to me going by pics.Well i finnaly saw a true yellow belly in person and i have totaly changed my mind and i will end up getting at least one if not a pair in the near future

Re: Selective Breeding and looks
Selective breeding can influence the looks of the hatchlings, but not always. I've seen beautiful snakes make less than beautiful hatchlings and vice versa.

Scroll down and check out Sean's clowns versus the others shown. As noted, Piebalds and Calico's seem completely random and Pastels seem to fall somewhere between totally random and influenced by selective breeding.
It's funny, never was a Clown or Mojave guy myself, until Sean with his Reduced Patterns and Tom with his Crystals totally messed that up .

I actually remember seeing those, they are awesome!!! I love reduced snakes, it seems as if they are filled out.
