    Breeding hets to normals......value??

Ok. So, if you breed a 100% het for something (take yer pick) let's just say for example, hypo to just a regular normal. Would the babies all be 50% het or "possibles"? or would they be not much more than your average normals? And, if all the babies were 50% het for hypo, what would you odds be on breeding two 50% hets together????? For a recessive trait, breeding two 100% hets would yield 1 in 4 eggs being a baby homozygous (or an actual hypo, albino, etc) for that trait. Would that mean breeding two 50% hets (if possible) would have a 1 in 8 chance of an egg producing a baby with the homozygous trait? I was just curious-"gears randomly turning"........

    Re: Breeding hets to normals......value??

Alot of breeders prove out Poss hets this way if you have the time and the space it great. It is more time consuming but in the long run can pay off big time. Take the 50% breed them back to the 100% and see what comes out. I.E if dad is the 100% take all the females and breed them to dad see if you get morphs. Take the males and breed them to another 100% het of the same gene and see what you get. Some might prove out then again all might not. This doesn't mean the gene is'nt there it means your odds wern't good that season.

there have been alot of breeders that have been pleasently shocked that most of there poss have turned out. its worth the try if you can wait that long

    Re: Breeding hets to normals......value??

But what of the value of selling the offspring? If I breed a 100% het to a normal, could I justify selling the offspring as 50% hets, and for more than the average price for a normal?

    Re: Breeding hets to normals......value??

Yes. And guys like me and some of the other breeders will buy the whole clutch for a little more than the normal price to make sure I get all the hets. So if a normal is like 60.00 then 80.00 to 100.00 for a poss het is worth it depending on the morph and the price of the 100% het's at the time. I wouldn't pay 100.00 per snake for a clutch of poss. hets when a 100% het is say 125.00.

Just to clarify, this could mean that the gene isn't there. I wouldn't write it off after one breeding season but if after a couple, no go, its probably a normal.

Yea thats why I spesified for that season. I know of a breeder here in town that had been breeding hets and one of his Poss het albions didn't prove out for like three seasons so he took it as normal and sold it to a friend of mine. My friend breed it to his 100% het albino and had it produce 2 albino's. So its all depends.

I agree totaly that after two or three seasons if it didn't prove out then its more than likely normal.

Price depends on the het. The amount I paid for a 50% Possible het Lavender Albino female... well let's just say she wasn't cheap.

50% possible hets are sold all the time. It's a gamble to prove them out so they will be priced less than a 100% het.

The 50% only applies to the chance of it carrying the gene, If it proved to be a het your odds would still be 1 in 4 of producing a visual. As soon as it proved out it would be considered a 100% het.

    Re: Breeding hets to normals......value??

I'm actually going to be doing what you specified in your original post's scenario. I have a 100% het hypo (ghost) and some normal females I will be breeding him to. Now I realize the offspring will be possibles and normally I wouldn't dabble in that sort gamble. I picked up the het ghost male for closer to the price of a normal his size a few years back and because I love the normal type pattern he presents. Concerning the value of the offspring I don't think I would have much luck selling them for anything more than average price of normals. I could use the "possible het" as an added marketing ploy but like I said in this case I don't know how much luck I would have raising the price on them also due to the fact that someone like me is not a "known" breeder. Other possible het morphs as mentioned above still cost a pretty penny...its all about how much of a gamble the buyer is willing to take.
