lobsters are a little to small for a sav though. if you want roaches for a large lizzard go with hissers or something bigger.

Savs will eat small bugs still without a problem IMO. I feed my sav mealies occasionally and he has no problems with them. Discoid roaches are pretty big but I had no luck with getting them to breed in the 3 months+ I had them.

The hissing cockroaches wont survive out of their enclosure. Even if temps are in the 70s they will die within a few days. One of the good things about keeping a tropical roach.

Another easy way to keep them from escaping is to put dishsoap or vaseline in a one inch band around the top of the enclosure. Works great for worms.

I did tons of research into the roaches as I had thought about keeping them ... this is one of the few things my wife flat out refused (she's from southern california).

There is a teflon coating product that will work for climbing roaches as well.

Hisser's have a tougher outer shell, as compared to some other feeder roaches, so they're not the best feeders, but they're pretty good.

I use B. dubia and B. latteralis for feeders myself.

I can totally appreciate the benefits of roaches as feeders....I know how utterly stinky and nasty crickets can be...and roaches sound like a piece of cake to raise compared to crix. But just seeing those pictures gives me super-sized heebie-jeebies!


I think there must be some deeply ingrained, hard-wired disgust between the housewife and the cockroach!
