    Red face Humidity?

I'm really sorry for picking everyones brain so much, but being new and all, I want to make sure I do everything right. And all of you have been sooo helpful . Here's my new question: The temps in the tank have settled now. . . 72 on the cool, 82 on the warm. The problem is though, that the humidity is 45 on the warm side, and all the way up at 68 on the cool side. I've noticed both (who will soon be moved to separate enclosures) like to chill out in the very middle of the tank on the bottom, with the exception of a little exploring . I am concerned about the cool sides humidity. . . I've found varying info. Some sites don't mention exact humidity, while I've also read 30 or a little higher is good. . . anyone know if mine is too high? I have a homemade lid (egg crate and pastic) with LOTS of holes drilled into it. If the humidity is too high, then I will go get a screen lid. I'm sure that will solve the problem. I was just wondering if anyone thinks this is nescessary. I feel so silly . . . I did research on these guys before I bought, but the main source of information came from my local reptile shop. I don't think they gave me good information They told me not to worry about humidity, and room temp is fine. I'm trying to be a good "mommy" and I keep reading and doing research, but now I find a LOT of information that contradicts everything they have told me. I'm finding that there a lot of different opinions when it comes to corn snakes and husbandry, so I come here to find the best consensus. I really hope I don't annoy you all with my "?" seeing as how I'm sure you've answered them a million times before. All I ask is that you please be patient with me. thanks for everything guys. Sorry so long winded

You are not annoying in the least.. it's good to ask questions!

Humidity in the 50-60% range is good. 68% is a bit high, so if you either drill a few more holes, or use the screen lid (you may have to cover a portion of it with plastic wrap to make it hold enough humidity) you'll be fine.

    Re: Humidity?

Thanks for the response! . But if I reduce the humidity, the warm side will be too low won't it? I've been reading and some caresheets say 40-60% . . . how can I strike a balance? I really don't want them to get a repiratory infection, or have problems shedding. I can't believe there is so much variance between the two sides in a 10 gallon tank. What if I drilled more holes on the cool side? Pretty soon I'm going to have this problem in their new set up . I'll be sure to get everything perfectly stable before I move them over. I don't want them to have to be stressed out anymore than they have to be. I'm still sooo amazed at how beautiful they are. . . and to think I used to be a phobe. . . lol

Alicia i am glad your temps are down to the safe range .I will be honest with you on the humidity range on corn snakes,i could not tell you the exact range. The reason for this is i have never had a problem with any of my corn snakes shedding perfectly. What i do when they are in the last stage of the shed cycle is spray the enclosure once a day until i see they have shed. Now sometimes i miss my snow corn when she is in shed since she is so light colored as it is,she still sheds perfectly without me spraying the enclosure.I keep all of my corn snakes in 20 gal long tanks with the screen lids. You are not annoying or a headache at all .I hope this helps you.I await your million and one question

Shelby,do you have corn snakes also? The reason i ask is the care sheet here stated that corns need to be kept at 90ish on the hot side.I keep my corns at 80ish with no problems. If you do have corns what are your temps at?

    Re: Humidity?

I have kept corns in the past, and my mom has one currently.

If your humidity dips below 40% on the warm side it's no big deal. Corns will shed perfectly in low humidity.. it's amazing.

Temp range should be around 80 cool side (as low as 75 is safe) and 85-88 warm side.

See now i wonder why my corn snakes have no problems with there hot side being at 80ish? When i say 80ish its between 80 to 81 degrees anytime i check it.

Corns are tough customers.. they can be healthy in less than ideal conditions.

Well see now that makes it difficult for me to give advice on the temps then .When i started keeping corns this is the temps i was told to keep them at.Several breeders in my area also keep the temps at the 80ish area.

    Re: Humidity?

They seem to do fine in lower temps.. I think that they just grow faster (higher metabolism) in the slightly higher temps.

Herpetology is still a young science.. we still have a lot to learn!
