Please help
This is Anton and the guy that I him from said that he was 75% sure he was a male. I want to have him sexed just to make sure. In a year or so I would like to get a pied female and breed a little (after I learn as much as I can). I called every vet that I know of in my area and there was only one that was a "reptile" vet. I asked her if she has ever probed a snake before, and she said "I've never sexed a snake before but if you have another one that has been sexed for me to use as a guide I'd try it." I told her that my snake was not going to be guine pig to learn off of, then I hung up. Can you belive that? And she was a reptile vet! Any way my question, is there a web site that I can go to so I can find an experienced vet or should I keep cold calling the yellow pages?

Is this guy het for anything? If you spend the money on a pied female(more than likely $3k), you will get 100% hets and try to breed the het males back to the original female. If you can, find a pair and breed them when they are the right size. I have seen a few pairs of 100% hets go for $1000-$1300 but are usually 06 clutches.

OK well you may have to travel but there are quite a few ARAV members in NC

I'm going a tad off topic here but I will say that I think it was quite rude of you to hang up on her. The vet was professional enough to admit that she hadn't probed before and offered to do what you had wanted. A simple 'no thank you' would have sufficed. There are too few reptile vets as it is to be rude to the ones we have that are trying.

Re: Please help
First of all they put me on hold for 10 min, and then told me she would try for the first time ever on my snake and asked again after I said NO. So I sorry for you, but the well fair of my animals is more important to me than being polite to some one who claims to be a profesional but can't do some thing as simple as sexing. Then wanting to experiment on my snake. I'm sorry to say but don't you think its kinda of rude of you to call me names when I'm just asking for a little help and you don't even know the whole story. Again I'm sorry you feel that way and to the rest of you thanks for the help, the link above helped me find a vet about 1/2 an hour away.

I see no where in my post where I called you names. A bit too defensive are we?
And if sexing is so simple is there a reason you can't do it yourself?

When you say "can't do something as simple as sexing", you should be aware that herp classes are not part of a standard veterinary curriculum, and that most vets have -never- done it. Unless they had a special interest in herps and went out of their way to take classes, then it's simply not something they'll have been exposed to in school. I take offense at the "claim to be a professional" thing...just because they don't offer a particular specialty interest does not mean they are not a very good and very professional vet in other areas.
