I don't like the idea of using toilet or papertowel rolls because you can't just lift the hide off the snake. They can wedge themselves in there really good and won't come out unless they want to.

Just about anything around the house that you can turn into a shallow little cave will do....something you can cut or make a little entrance into. Old tupperware bowls or other plastic bowls you may have buried in the back of kitchen cabinets...butter tubs....sourcream tubs...whatever. Plastic is ideal because it's easy to clean. Cardboard is OK, but needs to be replaced frequently.

Or you can get some molding clay and build little hides with it. The kind you bake in the oven to cure it. I remember someone from a long time ago making little igloos for their snakes...very cute!
