Question New @ this still!! Help

Ok i have had my BP for a week now. I have made a few changes in her substrait, hides and temp to give her more security and comfort. I have only held her a few times and am not really sure if she is completely settled yet.

She ate with no problems Sunday and hasn't deficated as of yet. I have changed out her water about every other day..seems she hasn't touched it...her temps are @ 90* and 55-65% hum.

When i move her hide(s)... which is also her water bowl...she is very uncomfortable...can see by her breathing patterns.... When would be the best time to start handeling her?? I don't feel that i should wait too long, but i also want her to feel secure and trust me ?? Please offer any suggestions.

Also, thanks again for all the previous help with the temps and humidity.

Try and handle in the evening and move slow let your new buddy explore at his/her pace. Keep your handleing to a few minutes at first and the go from there. Your young snake views you as a predator and so naturaly is going to get nervous when you uncover her you basicly trigger the "Oh my God its a huge freaking Predator" responce. Just give it time and little at a time. hope this helps.

Re: New @ this still!! Help

It really takes time for a bp to feel settled and secure in their new home. You've only had her for a week, and in that week you've been messing around, changing her environment and handling her at some point. I'm not saying that tweaking her environment was wrong....you want to do what ya gotta do to make it just right. However...now that it's finally all set...you need to just leave her alone for at least a full week. Don't mess with her tub or anything, except provide fresh water if she needs it.

And then you start gradually letting her get used to your presence with brief handling sessions. What you're trying to do is get her to realize that you're not a predator, but just a weird aspect of her environment that picks her up and moves her around sometimes, but never hurts her. Patience and gentle persistence will win the day.

Hehe....very glad to be of help!

I've been studying and mooning over BP's for years....but wasn't able to actually get my first one until this past March. Due to a snake-reluctant spouse and a move-all-the-time lifestyle...building the kind of collection I dream of is many years in the future.
