    Got a hairless male

Needs a name and a lady. He's really too sweet and likes to cuddle (blankets..warmthings... whatever). I will get some pics...eventually... I plan on going lady-shopping in a few weeks or so.. Nyar. The closest thing to biting, even test biting was him licking my boyfriend's fingers. He's a constant little chatterer, just hold him and stroke behind his ears... chuu what a cutie.

    Needs a name too. Hmmm.

    Re: Got a hairless male

Be aware that hairless rats are poor feeders. Females often have trouble lactating and they are less prolific anyway. Hairlessness is a recessive gene, so make sure that all your females are haired and that you don't breed any of the offspring back to another hairless.

I dont plan on breeding any hairless females period.
As far as feeders, most (and then eventually all) of the babies will be bred for rubber boas, thus not needing to reach small or adult sizes.
We do have a haired male and would breed his massive self if i decide it is effecient for me to breed my own food as compared to buying it.

    Re: Got a hairless male

Hairless rats are my favorite pets (dont tell my snakes lol) Mine to loved to cuddle and give kisses. I had 2 males and a tiny little female named Sara.
I just dont think I could ever feed a hairless, because I was so attached to mine. All the more reason why they sat in my freezer for months after passing...I had planned on cremated them but never got around to it

    Re: Got a hairless male

Yes, he is definatly pet quality first. Honestly, were our other rat not so rat-aggressive I would rather use him to stud as he is very robust, healthy, and just an all around great rat health/size wise. He's still a bit skittish with people and does not try to bite- but squirms when held (he's a fist full let me tell you) but after living with his cage mate for months (that he was also raised and lived with before we got the pair), we came home to find a bloody mess. They had fought once before causing the now deceased probable blindness in one eye-but by using routine reintroduction methods they were fine up until June.
I know rats are social but now we're abit afraid to place him with another rat. I really dont see behavorially his excuse for fighting as they were the same age/size, has food and a very spacious and randomly re-arranged area to play for mental stimulation.
I know it would be much more different with a female, but rat-aggression, esp likely unprovoked isnt something i want to have in a line of my rats.
We still love him though, he's pet first so its not an option to feed him (that and he's too big for any of our animals in the first place)

The hairless boy, however, is the sweetest rat (between my males and females ive had) just by having him three days its a clear difference. Prehaps its just he wants to be warm and cuddled i dont know. Any hairless rats that we ever did 'raise' from him or ever wouldn't be used as food regardless. It just doesnt seem healthy enough for the snakes. But since babies usually have fur and then drop it (depending on which genetic line i believe) i dont think that will be a problem with our rubber boas which will get them in the tiny-small sizes.

    Re: Got a hairless male

I have a few hairless, and honestly haven't had many issues with litter size, and no problems with the babies not growing to fat pups fairly quickly. I do keep more than one female in a bin, and they all tend to nurse the babies, but the babies in that particular bin seem to be terribly obese. Just saying, maybe I got lucky.

LOL....probably way before your time...or the time of most folks who post here. Kojak is a TV character...one of the original Private Investigator types. He was famous for his slick bald head and a lollipop he was always sucking on.

    Very cool character.
