second bp?
hey guys. im thinking bout getting a baby bp from pet supermarket . there bp's all burrow under the astro turf. to the normal eye, the tank looks super clean. but underneath the astro turf is tons of crap and urates and skin. quite nasty. i really want too get that little guy out of there. heres my question. my parents absolutely hate the fact that i have a snake. if i get tthe second one, would i be able to drop it in the same 10 gallon that my bp is in now? it would be too obvious to my parents that i bought another bp if i have TWO tank setups.

Re: second bp?
I'd get a snake from a breeder. Most pet store snakes are wild caught and have lots of problems with their heath.
I know I want to "rescue" all the little baby BP's in the pet stores by me too that look like completly horrible, but I know if I did that - they would just fill that spot with another poor little one to live in those bad conditions.

Re: second bp?
breeders are a little too expensive for me right now :/ this baby is only 40 dollars. it still looks fine and everything, i just dont like the way they maintain their tanks.

Re: second bp?
Most breeders let there normal BP's go at around $30-$50. Even if a snake looks fine, does not mean it is fine inside ie: has URI, paricites, was not eaten yet, and the list goes on. I got my guy for $30 from a well known breeder.
Also, NEVER house to snakes together unless you are breeding them for a few days! Bad bad out comes when two snakes are housed together!

Re: second bp?
i'd do two things:
find a trustworthy employee, one that is sympathetic and knowledgable, and try to find out where they get their bp's from. if it's cb then ask when the last time it ate was, also if they've had mite problems, and a bonus would be taking it to a reliable vet. i know you're strapped for cash but waiting to save up a bit and buying from a breeder would be choice. i totally agree with lily on the fact that most sell wc. if that's the case- pass it up. i'd also try and convince your parents because any snake is a commitment and if you "want to get the little guy out of there" then you should make sure he has ideal conditions at your home, ie a separate tank. your parents may say no and that just means you gotta wait, i know that's life and there is no way if i hadn't moved out that my parents would let me keep another. if all that doesn't work (finding out wc or cb) and convincing your parents to let you keep another tank then you might as well try and do the right thing and let the store know about the conditions they are keeping their bps in, try to get them to set up another tank or get them to do regular cleanings and make sure the set up is correct- multiple hides, the temps and all that. hope that helps and good luck!

Re: second bp?
good luck with the store managers
my local petco has two baby ball pythons together with one hide (a half log...) a small water dish, and a branch. i feel so bad for the little guys.
they also kept their crested geckos at 83 degrees F! I've complained plenty of times but nothing has come of it.

Re: second bp?
Besides the fact that ball pythons should never be housed together, you should always quarantine new arrivals in a separate room for at least sixty days. So - no.
If you buy this snake, they'll just get more to replace him - you're only helping them out by purchasing it to get more.

Re: second bp?
2 snakes in one 10 gallon tank isnt a good idea. They'll be competing over space and it may just make them upset more. I wouldnt do it.

Same here, my local petco has 10 Bp's in a 20 gallon long tank (30 inches) and 1 hide, 1 small water dish and 1 small plant. They all cram either inside the hide or try to get around the water dish, poor things. I help the Bp's there and the biggest and naughtiest one there looks fat like it just ate but its flat? Its really weird. The snake all look like they just eaten and look flat. The youngest one there a 2 weeker they just shipped from the wild is starting to look "flat" obviously these snake are dehrydrated. The humidty is 40% and temps 87 throughtout the tank!!!!!!!!!:cens0r: :cens0r:     :cens0r: :cens0r:
