Injustice! (Not really bad buut..)
My loser roomie at school is afraid of snakes and won't let my keep my little Monty. I use emphasis on little too...He's barely a foot and a half, if that. He also was afraid that I/he would be busted with possession (of a snake that is) as it is a rule not to have anything but fish in the dorm suites. Funny part is, I've never met the RA, nor has he/she ever been by so the chances of that are highly unlikely. I mean, I pulled it off last year with no problems.
It just makes me sad...

That is my plan actually. It just annoys me. I don't know how anyone can be afraid of a snake

Yeah i understand where you're coming from. My roommate is scared but is pretty confident he can get over his fear...he touched a 7 foot long red tail the other day and said it felt really good to face his fear...so I don't know if there is any room for convincing that they're harmless and they won't escape...Has he seen them?

Re: Injustice! (Not really bad buut..)
All 4 years of my college ( i just graduated) and every year i had some sort of animal, between a boa my freshman year, bp sophmore and senior year and turtles junior year. My roomy was cool with it which i think is more of the problem. At my school it was the whole fish rule too. Freshman year my RA did a random inspection with the RHD (Head grad student RA) and he saw the tank looked at me and said quietly he would be back. He thought it was cool and would come to visit him, next year i told the RA my history and how i couldn't go home to feed the new baby, and she said as long as she didn't SEE/KNOW it, it was ok, everyone loves turtles so thats no biggy.
You have to remember that the room needs to be shared with the roomy, so if you get busted for it its his problem too. Just be smart, wait a few weeks (probably a month or 2) to figure out the routine of the dorm Staff. If they do random searches often then don't bring them if they don't and its ok go for it.
Don't tell lots of people you have it if you do, you don't want to be known as the kid with the snake, because people may want to steal him, get drunk and break the cage light etc, or it may get back to the staff.
sorry for the tangent but thats what my experience was.
good luck

Oh yes, I'm very secretive about him. He is like the air...
But seriously. He's sorta one of those passive people that won't even say no it's not cool or yes it is. I had to basically force him to give an answer. My old roomie was totally cool with him last year, so I'm thinking I will be hitting him up at somepoint this year.
We'll see.

Maybe you could find another trusted friend to keep him for awhile for you? It seems like you love yer little guy and don't want to lose him; what a whiny roommate!

1. If it's against the rules, then you shouldn't have one, but I know everyone tends to break that rule at some point in a dorm.
2. Your roommate has the right to enjoy the room just like you do. If he is afraid of snakes, then respect that fear and see if you can room with someone else. Talk it out with him, and explain you understand. A lot of people fear snakes, and with some talking and you pointing out how secure the cage is, and how tiny and harmless the snake is he might give it a try.
3. Keeping it quiet is a GOOD bit of advice. People do dumb stuff to snakes in general, and to keep him safe, keep him quiet.
