Birthing problem?

One of my breeder females, I thought might have been to old to be breed is pregnant. She had started to bleed a few hours ago and is cont. to bleed without any babies. I read somewhere that after two hours (which it has been) has passed without babies that it is bad. I have been trying to massage her in case a baby is stuck (there is a lump on one of her inner sides) Any ideas to help bring on the babies?

Whoa, sorry to read that your rat is having problems delivering her babies.I have never had any problems like this sorry,how is she now?

She's just laying there, poor thing. I don't know what to do. I think one of the babies is stuck because there is a lump on her inner right side. I have been rubbing it trying to get it to move but have had no luck. I don't know what else to do. Poor rat.

Thank you. Everything is still the same. I thought when I checked I her she was dead but shes luckly isn't. Still no babies but still the lump. So yeah I am really thinking that one is stuck now.

If you haven't taken her to the vet by now... You need to put her to sleep. The babies are not going to come on her own and you need to end her suffering. It is very wrong to leave an animal overnight who could be bleeding internally or have toxemia because you couldn't get her to a vet just to put her to sleep. Regardless of whether or not these animals are for food purposes or for pets, we have a duty to take care of them while they are with us. We can't just stand aside and "let nature take its course...". That poor rat could take 3 or more days to die.

I hope you do the right thing very soon and end her suffering. Next time you breed rats, make sure they are over 4 months and under 12-14 months. This will help get rid of any problems associated with birthing.

I wasn't trying to breed her. I was thinking she was too old so I was going to feed her to one of my snakes but then she looked pregnant and yesterday I found blood. I assumed that she needed to be taken to the vet but none are open on sundays.

I froze her. Its the only way I could kill her. I didn't mean for her to suffer.

That was hardly the humane way to put an animal out of its suffering. Frankly I am disgusted that you would even think to do it that way.

Argh; freezing? I think that even a whack against a rock or concrete floor would have been more humane; at least that'd be pretty instant.
