Is this an adult pastel we're talking about? Mites is the first thing that comes to mind but if you have that squared away then I don't know. Perhaps its just a recently developed qwerk. Unless its a fairly young snake I wouldn't worry with the shedding aspect, each snake is unique. I would just make sure he's not soaking in there for too long everyday, you wouldn't want to increase the risk of scale rot.
