Might not be getting my RTB :(

So I told my Grandma that I want to get a RTB. She asked about the size they get, and I told her and she instantly said "No". So I had to ask why? She's concerned about it getting out. I've had birds, dogs, snakes, lizards and a ferret. None have EVER got out. So I talked to her last night and she still says she's scared it will get ahold of our 84 pound golden lab "Kylie" and I told her I think that Kylie would do more damage then the snake would do to her. Depending on a possible stand-off situtation. So I'm hoping she'll understand that I've always been responsible. I need to move out! Haha.

My hubby has similar fears of anything bigger than a corn snake. I have yet to figure out how to calm or soothe irrational fears, but if I come up with something, I'll let you know.

Thumbs up Re: Might not be getting my RTB :(

get a male? i believe they get much smaller than the females. i believe 6 ft in full grown for a male but obviously it can differ. if you're getting an aquarium set up (which obviously sucks for controlling temps and humidity) but with the lids with locks it is an easy way to keep your grandma from worrying. also stacking books works i've heard but obviously much less reliable. if i were you i'd try to impress her with your knowledge and research you've done on rtbs and also on possible setups. i would doubt an escape if you get a lock and also stores sell extra locks or use heavy duty clips.

Yeah, I gave her the whole run down. I told her males are from 5-7 feet, and even for their size can be considered for informed starter herpers. But I'll talk to her again. When my sis was running away from home ect, I took care of her pet rat, and her dog. And my pets have always been healthy. Even when I took my other reptiles for check-ups the vets even said they were happy to see someone bring in a healthy pet with no burns, underfed or dehydrated. I could use my trump card and tell her my b-day is coming up (Oct 8th) and make that my b-day gift!

Do it... haha. I have already used my Christmas, and B-day (late march) presents on snakes. I am in a different boat though, I live on my own and my mom LOVES snakes so she is cool buying them for me!

I'd love to live on my own, but the rent out here in LA is SOOO high. And if I lived in a hell hole, I'd still be struggling.

Fortunately my financial aid is paying for off-campus housing, so I am really lucky.

LUCKY! Haha. I still pay rent though. I can't take my grandmas kindness for granted so I volunteered to pay her rent. I'm hoping my karma will help me with my RTB need. I found a wallet on Tuesday with 660.00 cash and I found the owner and gave it back to him. My friends and co-workers wanted to kill me when I told em I didn't steal the money. I told em "Uh, dudes? That's called STEALING!" ... I explained I have no respect for money and what it has become, so me stealing it is just lame.

that's awesome! very respectable and i'm sure karma will hit you back big somehow. good luck with everything, getting your grandma to understand and all. i bet the birthday thing will work and also coming off as informed as possible. maybe even get the set up and show her what it's like with the security and all (lock) and make sure you're able to return it in case she flips out. but yeah a visual demonstration of how sure you are that the rtb won't get out would probably do the trick topped with a bit of that birthday plea.
