    Genetics???

    I am experienced keeper but never attempted breeding. I would like to start not this season but the next. My question is...is there anywhere that I can learn more about the genetic morphs of the ball python and how they work together or against one another. For example, if I bred a pied and a pastel what would the clutch likely produce. Anyone that could give me any information it would be appreciated. Like I say I am new to breeding and want to learn as much as possible before starting.

    they have an ez way to show genetics, it dosent show all the morphs but some very common/well known morphs.

    the page is in a "photo+photo= photo" format. makeing it just a tad easyer. it also has a "Genetics 101" link that is very good reading.

    Edit: they also have an AWESOME Breeding Pictorial in the gallery section of the page.

    Someone correct me if I'm wrong (Pied x pastel) would produce normals and pastels which would all be 100% hetpied's. If the odd's go the way they should 50% of the clutch would be pastels.
    Absolutely obsessed with ball pythons!

    Thank you guys for the help. I tried the genetics wizard link but I couldn't get it to work. I also typed it into my browser and it still wouldn't bring the site up. But either way thanks to all that replied.

    Can someone explain why that is? Pastel x Pied = Pastels and 100% HET Pieds? I completely believe you I'm just lacking the snake like common sense that would have generated that anwser in my mind.

    They actually would result in 100% het pied and pastels that are 100% het pied.

    Pastel is a co-dominant trait, with one allele being for pastel and one allele being for normal. The babies that inherit the pastel allele will be pastels, the ones that inherit the normal allele will be normals.

    Pied is a heterozygous (or recessive) trait - which means that both alleles have to be pied in order to get a visible pied. So, all the offspring of the pastelxpied will recieve ONE allele of the pied, and all will be 100% heterozygous because all will get 1/2 of the pieds alleles (and the visible pied has TWO alleles for pied), so all the offspring will carry one allele for pied, which makes all the offspring 100% het for piebald.

    So the offspring of piedxpastel will either get a normal or pastel allele from the pastel parent and all will get one allele of the pied from the pied parent.

    Normal gene + pied gene = het pied
    Pastel gene + pied gene = pastel het pied

    Are you more confused now?
