    Petfinder.com (Rescues)

I was looking around today and I found this site. Don't know if its popular or not but I saw so many pictures of snakes with retain sheds, others just gorgeous needing a home, broke my heart. I figured I would put this up and maybe help get some of these poor snakes rescued.

It's a really popular site though most folks I know use it for dog and cat rescue. Quite honestly I never really thought about checking it for herp rescue. Thanks Rich!

I checked for reptiles and most of them were iguanas.

Yeah, there are a LOT of iggies.. and turtles. Kinda stuns me how many are up for rescue, while people continue to buy them from pet stores.. if someone wanted a turtle or an iggy, they sould definately look into that instead of buying.
No BPs in my area that I could see..

I've looked up all sorts of animals on that site. What's really surprising is the number of horses. I never realized how many horses were up for adoption. If I ever get the room and the money for one, I'm definately adopting!

    Re: Petfinder.com (Rescues)

Oh yeah; horses are a huge adoption-needing niche. People basically show them until they are not earning anymore money, get hurt, or are not breedable.. and then ditch them at a rescue. Others end up being there after suffering neglect; their feet get bad and no one wants to buy them, so there they go.
It is really sad. i can only afford time-wise the ones we have now; I would love to be a millionaire and buy huge amounts of land and just rescue/care for a thousand horses.

It's awfully sad Lynn. I've watched the Animal Cops show and seen horses that I was amazed were even still breathing. I hate any abuse of animals but somehow such a large, regal animal as a horse left in that awful condition, hundreds of pounds underweight, on three legs, hooves destroyed, whatever...is just about the most heartbreaking thing I've ever seen. I think people have no clue how expensive it is to keep a horse properly and think they can just turn it out into a crappy bit of grass and it'll do fine. People are generally idiots.

    Re: Petfinder.com (Rescues)

One of my biggest girls came off of petfinder. She was 1300g when I brought her home, all scarred and hungry!! The shelter she was at didn't really know what to do with her, and was feeding her a mouse every 2 weeks. Ive had her for about 3 months and now that same girl is 1800g and ready to grow more.

Petfinder is def. worth checking often - it's always changing. Balls dont show up often, but when they do, it feels so great to take them in and get them healthy. I just wish I had room for all the other herps, rodents, felines + canines, horses, etc
