Re: Pros and Cons of feeding rodents to snakes...

Our pet rats were supposed to be snake food, but the snake was on a fast. I'm finding it difficult to gas the babies, but I usu. buy FT from some vendor out in La-La Land so that I don't "know" the rats.

Mice on the other hand are nasty little boogers, and even when I HAD them, it was easy to feed them off. Luckily now all our snakes are on the various sizes of rats. But yeah, I just kept another five little does. They're all out of our awesome mommy rat, Peekaboo, and they're going to be part of a feeder colony. Terminal crosses of litters so we have enough of the other sizes that I can't get from Bryan or the other place.

Re: Pros and Cons of feeding rodents to snakes...

I know; it is a pretty odd balance, what ot feed off VS. what to get attached to keep/handle. I keep my distance from all our rats, because I they are really secondary; if I gave up snake keeping, the rats would be gone too.
But they are cute (damn cute, really) as pinks/fuzzies. When they become hoppers, it makes it easier to feed them off, to me; that's when they look too ratlike!

I do admit, I like my rats..... funny thing is, I get this feeling the snakes like them too!

when we buy our feeder mice we specifically say, "no cute mice and no pregnant mamas" cause they immediately become pets!

Re: Pros and Cons of feeding rodents to snakes...

I only view rodents as a food source for my snakes. My wife and daughter try every now and then to get me to keep some rats as pets.I tell them they are pets until a snake is hungry.I see nothing wrong with people having rats as pets, its just not for me.
