    Question Protection

    Hey, Y'all!!!

Now that I'm REEEAAALLY getting into the hobby, and MAN! do I want MORE!!! I'm looking to protect my pets as both pets and investments.....so...

How do you guys do it???? Those of you who are a business breeding these top-end morphs (Adam? Bill? Ken? Jamie? Chris???), how do you protect against, thefts, death, fires, etc??? Who's your insurance carrier? Do you even HAVE insurance?

Or those of you who have pets (Gen? Jo? Christie????) but they're the morphs(or eventually you'll have morphs) and you want to protect your babies??? How/ who do you do it (with)?

My expensive horses and dairy cattle were insured w/a company that specialized in horses/livestock, but is there some company willing to do reptiles or other animals? I KNOW dog breeders and others have to have some coverage, some how, but my car/renter/horse trailer policy carrier won't do my snakes. Since I'm looking at getting into the morphs for both boas and balls, becoming a rescue for snakes, and (eventually) breeding boas and balls, I'd like to find someone REPUTABLE that won't demand my first born and two years' of baby snakes, just to pay the premiums.

Is there anyone out there who can point me in the right direction???? I'd appreciate any help someone might be able to provide!!!!

    Thanks!

    Thumbs up Re: Protection

I have the most reliable theft and home protection all in one 2 PIT BULLS .We have lived in our house for 4yrs and have had only 2 people actually knock at our door. One was the cilco guy.The screen door was the only thing between him and our dogs(he now stands outside the gate and yells that he is here to read the meters) .Second was someone trying to sell magazines(she must have spread the word as we have never been bothered again lol). Now dont get me wrong our dogs are not killers by no means. They know who belongs and who does not and they protect everything. When i say everything i mean it if a bird lands in our yard our female chases them off lol.Why pay someone who gives you problems if you have a claim. Re: Protection

I actually just renewed my renter's insurance policy, and asked if they could add a rider to cover all of the animals I have. Traveler's declined because they simply don't cover pets. I'm not sure about other companies though. There's got to be an insurance co. out there that offers homeowners/renters insurance that would cover pets. You're premium would definitely go up, but at least you'd be insured for the death of the animals during a fire or windstorm.

    Re: Protection

    Joe,

I'd be moooore than pleased to keep a good dog, (we're looking for one anyway) but the pet dog wouldn't be able to cover the costs of loss should we have a fire or some other major catastrophe and we lose our hets and special babies.

I'm hoping to add an albino ball, het pieds, and axanthics, and since these would be a one-time deal until I can breed them, I want to be sure they're covered.

I DO appreciate your input tho. Maybe I'll get in touch w/my 1/2 BIL (? Huh??? LOL ) and see if he's breeding his red noses yet.

Brad, Thx. My State Farm doesn't do ANY animals with my renters' policy. And even when I had homeowners animals weren't covered as part of the property/belongings there either.

Ken? Adam??? ANY of you other breeders and businesspeeps??????????

In a standard policy, there's usually an exclusion for live animals...they are basically considered "property" and you need a seperate rider to get them covered.

I talked to someone one time that had some really expensive birds that they had insured, but I forgot which company he was with. You'll just have to call around if you are serious about getting coverage.

As for businesses, I'm sure its easier for find coverage through a business insurance policy. Would a colony of breeding ball pythons be considered inventory or livestock? And if you had something like a power outtage that killed 20 clutches of eggs or a fire that burned off your collection? If you have coverage for business interruption...geeze...the sky could be the limit in calculating a loss in that mess.

The company I work for represented a business that bred saltwater fish, corals, inverts, etc. They had all these "special" projects going when a hurricane came through and wiped out half of their stock. Our company successfully argued for a business interruption claim that covered for losses over a 5 year time span and earned the client an awesome settlement. I would think a ball python breeder wouldn't be treated any differently.

    Re: Protection

thanks for the tips. That's the sort of information that I'm looking for, besides names of possible companies that would do it.

I think that Wysocki once said that he put allot of energy into trying to find insurance for his collection and was not successful.

My insurance is proper husbandry tools and living in a safe home. The rest I can not control.

    Re: Protection

Sorry, didn't see this post till now.

I just have a home security system and a steel door with deadbolt (keyed differently than the rest of the house).

I haven't had much luck with finding insurance. Farmers doesn't even know I have the snakes in the house... Nor does anyone else in my neighborhood.

Fire is the biggest concern for me more than theft.

    Re: Protection

That's my biggest fear too....and should everything burn down around my ears, I'm s***wed!!!!!!!!!! I wouldn't be able to start over for a loooooong time.

So I'm trying to hedge my bets, as it were. I could get my horses and cattle covered, but not these morphs I'm going to be getting into???!?????

Maybe what I'll have to do is just set aside my own "personal" premiums into an account somewhere? *sigh*

    Any other ideas?
