    my snake doesn't thermoregulate

I've had my pair of BPs for a few weeks now and I've noticed that the female doesn't seem to really thermoregulate. She's very shy and spends almost all her time in her hide. My male usually has his head sticking out at night and sometimes comes out to see what's going but but she always stays firmly curled up in her hide. Her tub has two hides - the warm hide ranges from about 90-96 and the cool hide from 82-86. Both hides are identical (overturned flowerpots with a hole in the side). After handling her I usually lower her into her tub and she slithers into whichever hide I direct her towards but then pretty much stays there till the next time I take her out. The male usually moves into his cool hide after I direct him into his warm one.

She seems perfectly healthy otherwise - she's been eating well and had a perfect shed. Should I be worried?

No worries if you have them in seperate enclosures.

Provide the proper environment and your snake will do its thing....and unless you watch it 24 hours a day, how do you know it is not thermoregulating??

Nope, they probably just don't want to warm up or warm up when you are asleep or something.

What kind of thermometer are you using??

Nope. Sounds like you have a snake.

    Re: my snake doesn't thermoregulate

Thanks for the responses. The male and female are housed separately in identical rubbermaid tubs and I've had them for about 3 weeks now. Looking over my original post I realize I might not have made myself entirely clear.

The overall temp of the tubs fluctuates quite a bit (I ordered my JC thermostat weeks ago but it still hasn't arrived yet) yet my female doesn't seem to respond to the change. I've noticed the male moving between the warm and cool hides depending on how hot the room gets. But if I put the female in her cool hide she remains there for the next 2 days and likewise if I put her in the warm hide she stays there for the next 2 days regardless of how the temp in the tub changes. I usually take a glance in her tub every hour or so (at least on weekends when I'm home) and I'm a real night owl so I think I'd notice her moving hides.

I guess I'm not really worried (I see your point Adam) but more curious as to why she doesn't seem to feel the need to regulate her body temp when the male clearly does. My only really concern is that the temp in her warm hide can sometimes spike really high (getting close to 100) if the room gets too hot yet she stays put.

are you using a thermostat to control the heat source?

    100 deg. is too hot!

Because living creatures are like snow flakes ... no two are identical.

I agree with Vaughn ... get a thermostat ... 100 degrees is not good at all.

S/he said s/he ordered one but it hasn't arrived yet.

You can always go to PetCo and get a couple of Reptitemp therostats until the ones you ordered come in. They're only like 30-40 bucks depending on who has the sales.
