    Back into Balls

Well, I just got out of the navy and had to rid myself of all reptiles before that, but now that I am out I want to get back into it. I am taking Biology and the genetics really interests me and I like Ball Pythons tremendously (used to have 12 of them). Question is that I would like to start off a project this year with a budget of 1000-1500 dollars and I am unsure of what to get. I am not rushing nor do I want breeders now. Especially since I will move in January so it defeats the purpose. Well, if you can give me some advice let me know... I have money too so if you are looking to drop off anything then holla at me.

    Re: Back into Balls

First off, welcome to BP.net! :

To know where to start your initial investment into future BP breeding, it helps to know exactly what makes your heart race the most. For me, my top four favorites were pieds, clowns, caramels, and lessers. When it finally came time for me to buy my first BP, I happened to come into some extra cash (thanks in great part to a very generous hubby!). So....I wrote a little letter to a couple of favorite breeders of mine and said "I have $xxxx to spend...and these are the morphs I REALLY like (although I like them all!)...and I'd really like my first BP to be a female. What would you recommend?"

And so I'm now the proud owner of one 100% het caramel girl. It'll probably be another year or so before I can get her a boyfriend...and actual breeding won't be until years down the road because my hubby is AF and we move a lot. (You know how that goes! )

Anyhow...all that is my long-winded way to say narrow down what you REALLY want....have a game plan for the near and distant future...and then figure out where your money is best spent.

What are the ball pythons that interest you the most? Are you wanting morphs or just normals? I have a normal female left from my clutch this year, maybe 2 if the deal fails. Are you wanting babies, subadults or adults? I know i hit you with more questions then anything else lol.Let me know if you want info on the female(maybe females) i have left.

    Re: Back into Balls

Well, like you said, I like them all... I love normal ball pythons however I am really intrigued into the genetical aspect of it all. I really like the pastels and bumblebees and all of that. I am also really into albinos, pieds, stuff like that... Its hard to decide. I have the vision in my mind of mixing them all together anyways... Like I said 1000-1500 for this year (god i am an hour away from Daytona but I will be in Puerto Rico i think that week) and just something to start the collection and project. I would like to find out about co-dominant and recessive crosses and how much the genes are recombining.

    Re: Back into Balls

I am thinking about getting a male pastel cb06 and 3 possible het albino females...I would like to pick up a het hypo pair too, and a het albino male.... Does that seem like a good way to start off? I can raise those a bit, test out the het albino females while saving up for a pastel fem, spyder pair and some het pied's in the comming yrs.

welcome, poss. hets rock! i have 3 poss. albino girls i will be breeding this year. if 1 proves, it will be like hitting the lotto! lol. if albinos are your goal, i would buy the poss. hets and save up for a male albino. using a visual male albino will give you better odds on proving the poss. girls and at worst you have 100% het albino offspring. buy the females first then the males.

You mentioned you like co-dom/recessive crosses....and you had 1500 to spend...ever see a pastel hypo? They are awesome! Pastels that glow....

Pastel is co-dominant and hypo (ghost) is recessive. With 1500, you *might* be able to negotiate a package deal from a breeder.....there's a few different ways to go about it, and I'm sure you could that project started with that amount of capital.

Well, I figure those pos. hets. would be a fun thing to work with... im carefree enough that if they didnt prove out I would be cool. I can get a pair of het hypos and a pastel male or pastel male, 3 pos het albinos, het hypo male and het hypo albino..... ay que lastima que no puedo comprar todos.... I wish i had the money for all of them....

    Re: Back into Balls

First off, !!! Secondly; on a limited budget, I agree with Vaughn all the way. Poss. hets rock!! You get more chances for eggs, and more chances to "hit it" on the odds, and if none prove out, you still have breeding size normal females to play with. Personally I would rather have multiple poss. het females to breed than a het pair of the same gene. To keep yourself excited and occupied for the first season (growing up girls seems to take forever) get a co-dom male, probably a good lookin' pastel, and look around locally for an adult female or two. Just my take on things, I guess most importantly, buy what you enjoy. It's easier to clean when you have pretty things to look at.
