    Re: Spurs

SEXING AND BREEDING: A snake's sex can be determined in several ways. 1) Probing. This is the most reliable, but it should only be done by an experienced person. In this method, a metal probe is slipped through the vent to check for the presence of a hemipenis, the male copulatory organ. Every male has two hemipenes in the base of the tail. 2) A simple visual examination of the tail's length and thickness. The hemipenes make the tails of males longer and thicker than the tails of females of the same size. When looked at from the side, male tails are generally half as thick at the middle as at the base. Female tails are usually half as thick a quarter of the tail's length from the base. While learning, look at adult snakes of known sex before trying it on juveniles and adults of unknown sex. 3) Spurs. Male boa constrictors and pythons have spurs on either side of the vent that are longer than those of the females.

    No.

It sounds like you need to review basic ball python husbandry. Just about every good care sheet and basic ball python book available covers how to properly sex ball pythons ... if you're asking a question like that, I would suggest picking up a copy of either "The Ball Python Manual" or "The Complete Ball Python" as well as reading the care sheet on this forum ... Spending a little time to research on your own what your ball python is all about is a lot better than randomly asking basic questions over and over on a ball python forum ... your snake deserves it.

ive noticed my male and my cousins male have thick tail bases, larger spurs, and a slight lump right below the vent that my female does not have. my females spurs are sooo small you can hardly see them and she has a skinny tail compared to the two males.ofcourse this is only from 3 snakes so i dont have a vast amount of resources to be more accurate.

although i wouldnt use it as 100% law it does seem to hold atleast some truth, IMO. you still cant be 100% sure without popping or probing.

My snake with the biggest spurs is a 21 year old gal. Nope, no spur envy there.
