    eye caps

earlier today i bought a 3 year old 3 and a half foot male ball python from some girl who lives a town away from me. she had a general concept of husbandry but it wasnt exactly an ideal setup. now onto the prob. he shed probably yesterday and he appears to have retained an eye cap. i read here but i cant remember where that vegetable oil could be used on a qtip to get the caps to come off. is this true?

    Re: eye caps

I wouldn't do that. Best thing to do is to just leave it alone. A single retained eyecap won't hurt the snake at all. Most likely it'll just rub it off on its own within a couple of days...but if not, it'll come off with the next shed. My personal philosophy on eye-caps is to not risk permanent eye injury to mess with something that isn't threatening anyhow.

I agree JLC. One after one shed isn't a worry. With proper care and humidity it will come off.

Throw a humid hide into the enclosure, if it you want to try something. Or maybe even a soak, but I'd steer clear of the oil idea.

    Re: eye caps

Whoever told you oil more than likely meant mineral oil not veggie.
Best to do what others posted and just wait until next shed, if they don't come off then you can add a drop of mineral oil to each eye and that should aid in them coming off .( advice per Dr. Crum at Stahl exotic vet clinic)
Dr Crum actually said a drop on each eye after every shed would not hurt.

Just bump your humidity up next shed and you should be fine.
