    abnormal behavior

hey everyone ( new guy here)

i think somthing is wrong with my bp because it seems he mixes up his night and day time... hes always active during the day ( and i heard their nocturnal) and usualy at night he sleeps 5-10min after i shut his light off around midnight... and i was wondering why somtimes when i open his cage hes startled by the noise and kinda jumps like hes scared or somthing (can they hear??)

also if somone can tell me if its ok to handle a bp 6 hours after he eats if he doesnt seem to mind?

Generally you should wait 24-48 hours after feeding. If your snakey gets too stressed out he/she might reguritate the meal. Which is not healthly, and probably really really gross (I haven't seen it)

    Re: abnormal behavior

you turn his light off after midnight? try keeping it on from 8am to 8pm. or better yet, use a UTH (i prefer flexwatt) and not using a light at all.

i assume you have some method of heating his cage at night, right?

    Re: abnormal behavior

i turn light off around 11:30pm or midnight no later...i keep a heat pad under his hiding box(only at night) wich might explain him going there asoon as i close the light...i open his light 12 hours later(thats usualy when i startle him when i open the cage door to replace his water) and he comes out and usually stays out...i actually prefer him being awake throughout the day but i was wondering if it had any side effects specialy for feeding cuz i usually do it in the evening. and about picking him up after he eats he doesnt seemto mind at all specially if i wait a couple hours wich i do, 48 hours seems abit long to me what other reasons should i wait that long be4 taking him? because he never regurgitated his meal or had any feeding problems afterward

    btw thx for the help

    Re: abnormal behavior

I am new to keeping a royal python, but have had corns for over 2 years now.

What do you use as far as heat goes for the daytime ?

48 hours is the normal time you should leave snakes to digest their food. They also need correct heating in their envioroment in order to do this.

I reccomend that you leave the little guy well alone for the 48 hours after a feed.. he may have been 'ok' in the past, but its not too nice for them when they regurge, so I woudnt take the chance.

    Re: abnormal behavior

You might want to go over our caresheet and adjust your husbandry accordingly for your snake's benefit.

    http://www.ball-pythons.net/modules....warticle&id=52

As far as handling within hours of eating you are playing with fire. Not only does your snake need to be thermoregulating itself for digestion instead of being out in your hands, you are just asking for a regurge. It might not happen today or tomorrow but it will eventually happen. Regurging is very stressful on your snake. Their stomach acids are incredibly strong to be able to digest fur, bones and teeth so having that come up their throats is damaging.

Remember this is a snake, not a puppy and needs to be respected and treated as such.

    Re: abnormal behavior

alright thx for the replys i will definetly consider your suggestions(im kind of away from home for a while tho) id like to know what uth flexwatt is and ive done some research on the word thermoregulating but couldnt find anything at all related to snakes. and if i understand correctly it needs heat to eat so i should feed in the day? ive looked at the caresheet, seems im doing everything correcty exept the 48h wait period....is that what u meant franky?
