usually you let them settle in for a week or so. then attempt feeding, if they aren't feeding well, i'd hold off on the handling until they are. leave them alone for a day or so after feeding them.
ok wel then im on track ive had him for about a week have sucessfully fed him 3 days ago and i just held him just for 3 min (not too long dont need a depressed snake now do i) he was shy for a min and then crawled all over my hand so i guess everthing is fine.

I'm not sure there is a right answer as such but when I got Monty the consensus seemed to be leave him for a week to settle in then try and feed him and if that went ok then start short handling sessions a few days after that.
As long as he is eating I'm sure you're doing fine, the main thing is not to handle withing 48 hours of feeding.
