The events of the day....
This was something I was just waiting for.. Mark and I were in the kitchen making lunch, and we hear this rumbling sound; it has been VERY windy these past few days, and finally, the old barn's roof caved in. It has been steadily declining and shifting since before we moved in 4 yrs. ago, after being abandoned as a dairy barn in the 90's when the farmer who owned this place, succombed to methane fumes in one of its silos. It is about 60 feet from our house! Don't worry, this is not the barn we keep the horses in, lol. Here are the pics...

I want you to notice the most amazing, and frightening, thing here; there's a white pigeon with a nest inside. It is a pigeon, not a dove. I never see white ones; this is the only one I've seen in my life. I feel so bad for her; her nest will now be exposed to much of the elements, and there's not even any way we could rescue her (if she even needs rescuing..) it is very high up, and extremely unsafe for anyone to be up there by the rafters. I really hope that her nest is OK, not to mention her; I scarcely think that such an oddity would last long if it didn't have a secluded place, like what was once a barn roof, to hide/live in...

Wow, that does look scarey! Looks like a job for a serious demolition team! (But maybe after the pidgeon's baby is grown and she isn't using the nest anymore? )
Is that also owned by your landlord? It really does look like it needs to be torn down, for everyone's safety.

I am pretty worried; it is dark and she hasn't returned to the nest. But oddly it looks like it's empty; time to research pigeon's baby-rearing habits.

Re: The events of the day....
She may have abandoned it after the collapse...either because it scared her badly...or because she realized she was now exposed there. From my experiences watching pigeons and doves nest (have had several opportunities for both over the years here in Tucson)...they tend to build extremely temporary nest structures...lay an egg and raise the young very quickly, and then off they go to wherever it is they usually roost when not taking care of babies. That's why you rarely ever see "baby" pigeons...they grow VERY fast.

cmoe to think of it; I never have seen babies. Granted, I couldn't see her nest while the barn stood, but now it just looks empty. I only hope that she doesn't go far; she's pretty
