I did it again...

I went into a pet store in Austin called Herpeton. Their animals(reptiles and mammals) looked well-cared for, enclosures clean, animals had hides, etc.

So a friend and I sifted through the baby Balls as we always do, and we came across a tank of small(50g or so) babies that looked fairly dehydrated. So I started pulling some out and sexing them and found a female...

that was a ringer...

There were a few more that were reduced or were ringers, but were male. I'm fairly adept at popping baby Balls, and ones that were male popped out hemipenes and ones that were female popped out light pink tissue with slight veining(yes?). Hopefully we sexed them correctly. I didn't bring my probe set as I didn't think we were going "pet-storing".

So yeah, I came home with a 50g female ringer who has fairly good body tone, albeit mild dehydration. She had 2 mites on her that I picked off and squished and was promptly treated with Reptile Relief before she was bagged and put into a box.

We also went to a store called ZooKeeper a few blocks away that was also very decent(except for our experience with the mongooses, mongeese? mongi? Bah...) I also bought some Provent-A-Mite there, as well as a 1.1 pair of REX mice*dies*. Yay for fun breeding adventures. The mice are actually sweet and tolerate handling very well, surprising.

So anyway, back to the baby Ball. She's a Robin-snake , maybe one eye of an alien head on her whole body. She is currently in a 12qt tub with newspaper, 2 hides and a water bowl. Gotta love quarantine.

Becky I used to go to that store all the time when I was stationed in Ft. Hood Texas. But I wish they would quit housing multiple animals in single cages. Please tell me they don't still have the one large wooden enclosure with several large burmese pythons together.

No, they didn't have any Burmese(although the second Herpeton had 2 baby Burmese together). They did have a trio of common boas for sale, but they were in a largish wooden cage and seemed to have a good bit of room.

They did have a few animals housed together, but what can you expect? I'm just glad they were clean and the employees seemed like they cared. They were picking up water bowls when we got there(they were about to open) and were refilling them. There are a few Herpetons in Austin, and we went to 2. The first one was much better than the second. I wish I had known what locations they were at, so I could let people know not to go to that second one.

Wow cool.. rex mice? didn't know there was such a thing. I've seen satin mice (very pretty)

Can you post pics of your rex mice? Oh yeah.. and the BP too.

Congrats on the new BP Becky! I'm not really adept yet at popping yet but what I saw on little Muirne is like what you are describing. I took that to mean a female as well though I will be probing her when she's a bit bigger and is eating regularily for us and all that good stuff. She's very reduced as well and I'm seeing Robin's point of how lovely that look is

Can't wait to see pics of your new BP and the new mice! Do we have names yet LOL

Glad to hear it isn't as bad as it used to be. When I went here before they had a large wooden enclosure with 10 10ft+ burmese pythons in it.

To coin a phrase from Sherree - two things slay me with my normals- clean reduced patterns with little to no alien heads (and outlined in white is even better) and intense blushing!


I can't wait to see this new little girl after her settling in period! It is SO hard not to peek in on them, especially the smaller ones - I'm so convinced they are going to find the teeniest way to get out, and when they are curled up in their tiny hides, you're just not sure they're in there! LOL

Oh, and I also want to see the Rex mice too!
