Summer heating

Hi everyone I am currently heating Mitch's (my bp) tank with an U.T.H. Now that is getting hot is it ok for me to turn it off for the summer? My room gets pretty hot in the summer and I dont want to come home one day to see a cooked snaked.

You should always have your UTH plugged into a thermostat control device to prevent your enclosure from overheating. It's safer for your snake and your house.

Without personally monitoring and being aware of the temps in your room at all times, it would not be wise for anyone here to tell you whether or not you should turn it off.


With or without a UTH, you should maintain a heat gradient in the tank...92-94 on the warm side, 82-84 on the cooler side. That kind of gradient won't happen if you rely solely on the ambient temps of your bedroom.

So long as the UTH is hooked up to a reliable thermostat, it will be safe and not "cook" your snake, even if the room warms up.

Ok then I guess i'm going to buy a thermostat. This is my first summer with Mitch. I got him in september. At the time When I had the U.T.H the temps were 93 hot side and around 84-86 cool side and thats the way it stayed pretty much until now. Like I said i'm going to try to find a good one this weekend. About what is the average price range for a pretty good thermostat?

Well if you want a PRETTY GOOD one it will run you about $70 for a Ranco or Johnson. If you want a really good one it will cost you about $110 for a Helix or Herpstat.
