Your UTHs won't get too hot, so long as you have them hooked up to a reliable T-stat...or at the very least, a dimmer switch from the hardware store. It doesn't matter what kind of enclosure or substrate you have, you have to have some sort of control on those!

Melt a few extra holes with a soldering iron and you will be gold - i havent had to mist anything in plastic to date - maybe a slight nudge of the waterbowl at best.

All my balls are on newsprint and it's incurred zero problems in terms of efficiency as substrate. I used to worry about the "lack of traction" but that wound up being a moot point.
