    Pastels in Pics

Ok, I know that a lot of pastels are priced according to color but theres some low end pastels that look just like a normal except for a little bit more yellow. In real life are these usually more colorful.

    Re: Pastels in Pics

Disclaimer: I've never seen an "Adult" pastel in person....

I have two pastels currently, in July they'll be turning 1. They're still smokers, and completely different from EVERY normal I have (17). I have HEARD that there are some lower grade pastels that look very normalish when they reach adulthood... and I've seen some pics of them as well... with all of the blushing, you can still tell it's a pastel.. blushing, pale eyes... and I'm sure in person, they're still a LITTLE brighter... But they all loose some of their luster in adulthood.

Having said all of that... I haven't seen a super picture that I didn't like... but I wouldn't buy a "normalish pastel" in order to make supers with. I would only attempt supers with my most smokinest of smokinest animals!

Adult pastels still look different....maybe in photographs its hard to tell, but put them next to most any normal and you can tell. They are very pale in color and you can't miss that clear belly!

    Re: Pastels in Pics

There are really "ugly" pastels out there. You can still tell they are pastels but they are not what I would call great looking.

If you are going to breed, find THE BEST pastel you can and breed it to THE BEST normal you can find.
Also, pics of the parents of the pastel help.
The colors do fade as they age but there is really no way to mistake an adult pastel from an adult normal when you see them together.

I know that I post this picture way too often, but this is what a quality pastel should look like ...

... very different than a normal.

A good breeder will sell NICE animals.

Lots of people out there are pushing less than exceptional stuff just to make a buck.

    Big difference.

How much will a quality pastel go for? How do you know they are a quality pastel when they are hatchlings( can you post pics to see the difference)? i want to know because i am going to buy a male pastel, and i want to produce quality animals.

when looking at pastel babies look for the lightest/brightest one in the bunch. look for alot of fading on the dorsal and the back of the head. you want it to pop right away when you first see it.

I sold them this year for between $900 and $1,500 for males.

Unless you have a lot of hands on experience with pastels, I'd recommend working with a serious breeder that is going to take the time to set you up with a killer animal for your budget. You'll pay a little more than some of the fly by night guys, but for an animal that you're investing your hard earned money in that you're going to have to look at for the next 25+ years, I think it's worth it.

What a lot of people don't realize is that the "great deals" you see advertised on the net are some of the worst looking pastels out there. It's no wonder that these guys have to sell them for half of what the good breeders are charging.
