    Woooo Hooo!!!! Perfect first shed!!!!

Dax shed last night for the first time in our care, and he looks stunning!!!! We got the skin right after he shed it or close to then, it was still damp. We unrolled it and it is perfect, complete with eye caps. He looks so pretty!!!! Well, I think we jumped another hurtle. So far we have managed the first feeding, switching prey and now first shed. I hope this means we are doing this right!!!!!

Things couldn't be going better Mina! Congrats! Obviously you've got Dax nicely squared away and he's doing all his normal ball python things right on schedule. Geeze why do folks think these are such tough snakes to deal with. A bit of work, a bit of research and a bit of common sense and they aren't all that tricky really.

Well I guess I'm kind of old school about knowledge. I'm all for gathering as much knowledge (and verifying it is actually good knowledge) but I think it has to be tempered with a big dose of good old common sense. Maybe being raised by my grandparents is part of it, but I just know that some things you can't learn except by doing....kind of horse sense but more ummmm....slithery LOL.

Adam tried to explain it to me once. That even though a big female might be "by the books" ready to breed, he just knew that she wasn't going to go or shouldn't be allowed to try. How? Snake sense? Experience? Who knows but it's something I surely wish I had and hope I get one day. The getting of it will be an interesting road to walk.

Re: Woooo Hooo!!!! Perfect first shed!!!!

It could also be how you look at it. When we fell in love with Dax we didn't know he was supposed to be "difficult" to care for. We put a deposit down on him, came home and ripped up the net looking for how to's on care, feeding, housing, ect. A vet was not a problem, I have a friend who is an exotic vet and I already knew has delt with many snakes in the past.

We never looked at him as being a problem to be solved. Just a new baby that would need some time to settle in.
People that have problems with BP's could be setting themselves up for failure. If you believe you will have problems, you most likely will.

That's awesome! Did you frame the skin? We plan on framing it even if it isn't perfect. Our snake is about to go through his first shed with us and i was wondering how you helped your snake through it's shed. I know circumstances differ from snake to snake, though it's nice to have lots of advice. And i'm trying to get as much as i can. Your snake looks great. You should show us a picture of the skin if you can.
