Suriname Care
Since graduation is coming up I finally have the resources to get a new snake. I wanted boa more than a BP but I took it slow and got my BP. I now have some experience and I am thinking about getting a suriname boa. The main things I'm seeing is that the temps and humidity have to be spot on and regurge is common with overfeeding. I'm wondering if they are as sensitive to temps and humidity as balls or even more. Also who are some of the better breeders of surinames.

Re: Suriname Care
Well, I have three suris. It is very important to get a well started baby (if you want a baby) from a good breeder. A well started animal is less likely to regurge.
My young suri has never regurged (the only one who did was my male, and I believe it is because of the internal parasite problem that I'm dealing with now.. ICK)
The key with regurges is to keep feedings weekly, and smaller than you'd think. I don't feed her anything bigger than her belly is round, and at first I kept meals smaller than her girth. She has never refused a meal.
As with any snake, temps and humidity are important. Suris are not like a corn snake which can be kept in wildly varying temps and be fine.. but neither are ball pythons. If you have kept your BP in correct temperature/humidity ranges, then you can keep a surinam happy. They enjoy 50-60% humidity and cool side of 80 degrees warm side 88-90.
I have not purchased a suri from a breeder.. the baby I got from LLLreptile and my adult pair I got from a local keeper. I was very happy from the girl from LLL, but she was not CBB, but farm raised.

Re: Suriname Care
Oh and captive bred now too.. I can't say enough good things about LLL. I've gotten three snakes from them, all perfectly healthy.

Re: Suriname Care
Im still wary of them from some of the stuff I've heard. I would really prefer to buy from a private breeder. Does anybody know of anyone. This is harder to one that I thought.

Re: Suriname Care
What did you hear about them? I've never heard anything bad about LLL.
You can find a lot of ads on Kingsnake and Fauna Classifieds for suris.. I don't know how reputable any of them are, but you can look into it.

Re: Suriname Care
I don't know where I saw, something about snakes arriving emaciated and mite infested. Maybe I was wrong. They have always been good with the couple ?'s and buys I've had. I'll check BOI on them though. Theres a few ads right now but not much, hopefully in a couple weeks or a month some ads start popping up.

Re: Suriname Care
I know Prehistoric Pets is nororious for selling animals in bad shape.. but never have I heard LLL doing that. I went to a show where they had at least 100 animals there, and they all looked very healthy to me.
